Remembering Winter, Pastoral Morning, 2026, I Haven’t Forgotten

by Jon Katz

This was the harshest winter I can recall in my life on the farm, and I got the itch to go and dig out a few of the photos I took in the coldest weather of my life. Tons of snow and manure piles frozen to the ground. Thanks for all the kind words about the pictures. I hope they helped.

______

Above, Maria and Zinnia went sledding. They collided, of course.

_______

Zip is a snow and winter cat, as Barn Cats tend to be. He loved to sit up on the wooden poles and check out his Kingdom.

The Manure Mountain froze solid in the winter cold. Shovels didn’t touch it. It’s gone now, scattered out for fertilization.

The Amish are amazing. They came out working every day, no matter how much snow, no matter how cold.

Sheep in the snow, February.

  • 36 was the lowest; it snowed almost every day.

The winter pasture was and is beautiful.

I became a devoted bird watcher and some of them became devoted to looking at me.

  1. Yes, how could we forget this winter?
We had some days recently in the 70s and 80s, what a tease and now having 40-50 degree days!
    Stay warm!
