Pastoral Silence, The Quiet Beauty Of Nature Is My Theme In Our Deafening World. It’s A Beautiful Morning

by Jon Katz

Above, the apple trees – above photo – are beginning to bud. Lots of apples are coming.

Like most of the people I know, I can’t bear the news every day, perhaps this is what they are counting on – for none of us to pay attention. Lies prosper and truth struggles. I love the silence of nature. I walked with my Loner Camera and Zinnia through the pasture, soaking up the quiet. Through the barn window, I saw Maria is a remarkable thing – a wood stacking meditation, a demonstration of what it means to be in the moment, whatever you are doing.

She lifted the logs one at a time and paid close attention, cutting out the awful clamor of the outside world. She loves doing it. I don’t wish to get into politics here, but I do wish the President would take a day off from his social media platform and give the world a rest. All of these photos were taken in silence. It was very sweet and healing. We can do it at home. We live in a world without silence; how sad. I’m going to take silent walks instead of following hateful news.

Wood stacking meditation. I would never have thought of it.

  1. Beautiful and serene photos to start my day, thank you Jon! Being in the moment IS a true meditation, though I never thought of wood stacking as being meditative…. (for me it is weed pulling). It is obviously unique to each individual, but as Edward Espe Brown said in the film *How to cook your life*….. focus fully on your task and that task only…whether it be kneading bread, cutting carrots, or washing dishes…. *that* is meditation in it’s truest form.
