Making History: Cambridge Pantry Healthy Food Day: Tuna, Chicken, Beets: They Want It For Their Children

by Jon Katz

Message From The Army Of Good To The Pantry Volunteers: “Thank you for all the work you do to make the lives of others a little easier.” Vvonne Fish-Kallard.

______

True Story: When I first met with Sarah several years ago, I suggested that we do an Amazon Wish List every month or so. Sarah smiled and asked, “What if we ask for help every day. Food doesn’t last long here.”

I gulped, “but I don’t want to put too much pressure on these people,” I answered. “Every day?”

I wasn’t sure how the Army of Good might react.

“Can we try it?” she asked. So we did. The rest, as they say, is obvious. I underestimaged these remarkable people. Much of the country seemed happy about the idea of removing all government support for people in need. What would the AOG people say?

I needn’t have asked. You are making history. When your kids or grandkids ask you where you were during this difficult day, you have a wonderful answer. You will not be forgotten.

We are three years into this wonderful experiment, and in all that time, the Army of Good people- most of whom I don’t know- rallied from all over the country. We are family now, within us, within them. I can’t thank you enough. I will never underestimate these wonderful people. As the country got angrier and crueler, they never once failed to show kindness and empathy. They have always come through. Every time. Thanks.
