Sue Silverstein, News From The Art Rime: Time Is Flying Bye – School Ends Soon

News from the Art Room – A Messy Week
Thanks good people for all of the support and love you have given Sue, one of the most loving people on the planet. School will be out soon, the column will be up once again in case you were wondering, Jon.
_________
Time is literally flying by. The end of the school year is just weeks away. I plan to spend a lot of time this summer cleaning and organizing. Kids have their own stashes of favorite things they plan to use tucked all over the place and yesterday I told them it was time to clean the house. We do so many kinds of projects that if everything is not where it’s supposed to be, the program can’t work.
______
Sometimes I plan a week where most of the classes are doing messy things. That would be this one! The crockpot is full of melted wax for wax resist. The room smells like Christmas because some of the wax is from melted candles. We were spraying fabric designs on cut up white sheets as well. Those are hanging all over the place to dry.

Next week, I throw in tye dye for good measure. The graduating students have a tradition. They dye a uniform polo shirt and wear it on the last day of class. The seniors finish a bit earlier than the rest of the school and their last day is coming fast! They are such a great group and so full of personality.
We had so much fun in photography yesterday. I challenged them to recreate an iconic photo using editing tools as if they were personally a part of the scene. My favorite was a recreation of the Beatles’ Abbey Road album cover.
_______
The group laid out paper to make the crosswalk lines and used AI to change the clothing and background.  They are masters of AI and it’s easy for them. We got talking about the time that photo was taken and all the folklore around it. It is tough for them to imagine that us old folks were young once!
________
A group of the 9th grade guys asked if they could have the latest dresser and refinish it for their end of the year project. What a crew! You should have seen them sanding, 6 guys, and one dresser. They want to paint it with wild colors and patterns. We are going to run out of sandpaper really soon.
I am excited to see what they do!
________
Thank you to Nancy from NY. Nancy sent a box with a lot of really interesting things for the students to turn into treasures!
Thank you to Patricia who continues to bless us repeatedly with her generosity.
Thank you to Karen, another angel in our lives who supports us with her kind generosity.
Thank you to Pat for the buttons and threads!

Thank you to Kathy for the berry themed box this week. There were a couple of bag charms enclosed, and the kids liked them so much they have been creating their own.
If you happen to have sandpaper you don’t have a use for, we would be happy to have it. My crew of dresser refinishers is wiping me out.  Healthy snacks, paint, small size glue sticks, clear glue, and canvas too!
Thank you to everyone who supports our program or sends good thoughts our way! We are truly blessed!
Don’t forget the kids love your letters and we will hang them in the room. Send us photos too!
