Flower Art, Year Four Hundred, Wednesday, July 8, 2026. Welcoming The Wildflower, Ignored But Quite Unbowed

by Jon Katz

There is something grounding about wildflowers. Unlike garden flowers, nobody plants them, nobody waters them, yet they still manage to burst through the earth and put on a show.

Wildflowers can’t be controlled, and neither can the girl with a soul boundless as the sky and a spirit as free and wild as the ocean.” — Melody Lee.

The wildflowers have begun coming up in the fields and pastures. Maria brought me a bouquet today. They don’t get as much attention as their elegant and snooty garden flowers. They grow on their own, get food on their own, and take up all kinds of odd shapes and colors that would never fly in a flower shop. But I’ve fallen in love with them in a sort of way; I love their colors and bravery. They are the unappreciated stars of the flower underworld. I wonder if any weddings or funerals choose them.

  1. Clever Zip. Any child or adult that’s been chased by a chicken knows to run. Dang, that purple flower is transcendent! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Every one is lovely in its own way and gives strength to weary souls. Thank you for sharing the unique beauty of wildflowers bathed in sunlight.
