A Remarkable Dream From Linda. It’s About Humanity And Empathy. Fighting For Both

by Jon Katz

There are a lot of things that bother me about the MAGA movement; it seems more like a plot to overthrow our government than a political movement to improve it. The most difficult part of this movement is its cruelty and hatred, which are tearing apart the fabric of our country. This morning, I received this message below from a reader of my blog; it was about a dream she had involving the President. It touched me deeply and says a great deal about two things missing in the so-called progressive movement and the MAGA one.

One is empathy, the other is compassion.

The message of the dream is powerful; it calls upon us to fight hard for our troubled democracy, but never to figure we are fighting human beings, many of them sick, broke, and mistreated. I have no love for our President, but he seems both ill and badly damaged to me. He is, no matter what he says and does, a fellow human. It is clear he is suffering. I don’t want to be unable or unwilling to see that.

You can make up your own decisions about the dream, but it is important to me. I don’t ever want to become what I say I hate. Thanks, Linda,  for sharing this remarkable dream.

________

“Jon, I had such a strange dream last night. I was on some sort of tour and was at a table for lunch with two friends. Our table sat next to a street with a small wall separating it from the people walking past. Suddenly, Trump sat at our table, very presidential, talking to us. My friend sitting next to him suddenly took his hand and asked him if he was okay, that he seemed troubled. And, suddenly, he became real, and we could tell that he needed that, and he told us some things about his burden. Then I leaned forward and sort of moved my hand in front of his face and said, “You seem very tired,” and he looked sad and said he was. Then he left us, and my third friend at the table said to my friend who had held his hand, “I can’t believe you comforted that horrible man. He loved holding your hand because you are beautiful!”

And she said she could tell he really needed it. At the table, we had been eating really beautiful, wonderful-tasting bread, which tore easily into pieces. Our tour guide came up to us on the other side of the wall on the street with a look on his face that said: “What was that all about ?” Sort of amazed. I handed him some of our bread, and he gave it to a homeless man who walked by just then, who ate it as he walked.
What my dream meant, I have no idea. I have no respect for Trump and think he is a horrible president and person. I woke up from this dream and made myself remember it, and I thought the only person who would be interested in it would be you, so here it is.
Linda, now living in…”
