Above: I call this “The Daily Scratch.” Zip almost demands it, but I love doing it. He expects it. Then I get to work, and he leaves me alone.

Every afternoon, I go out onto the back porch to take some flower photos in the light. Sometimes I go inside; sometimes I look to see where the sun is. I love a lot of natural light from outside.

Every day without fail, Zip pops up and jumps onto the table where the flowers are, and where I work. I spent some time scratching him, patting him, and talking to him. He is insistent on having these few minutes with me. Then, he will curl up on one end of the table and go to sleep, after some intense purring.

Today, our day began a little differently. Maria took this photo of Zip popping up in the new woodpile she is building. Seeing him sit on this throne, King of everything he sees, is amazing. He loves it up there. When he came down, he found me telling on the porch, taking pictures, and he went to sleep. I talk to him, tell him what I am doing. Then I forget he is there.

I can’t imagine flower pictures without Zip in the frame.
