Today, we evoke the ghost of Betty Crocker and her much-loved baked goods. She needs help; the Baked Goods at the Pantry are just about gone- empty shelves. The Cambridge Pantry needs some assistance.

Here is what the Pantry Needs: Sarah’s weekend request for help.

These mixes are things the family makes all together, an important bright spot for these beleaguered families. “We normally get assorted boxes of baking supplies from the Food Bank, but they have been unavailable for the past few weeks. We are running out,” says Sarah. That seems to be the trend.

Betty Crocker was not a real person, but a fictional character and marketing idea. Created in 1921,  she served as a personalized face for consumer baking questions. By the 1940s, she became a massive cultural icon. A 1945 Fortune magazine poll even ranked her as the second most popular woman in America, second only to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Maybe she’s watching.

Note: In July, the Army of Good donated 1,579 lbs of items for the Cambridge Pantry. That was 200 lbs more than the month before, and it looks like it will be even more for August, halfway through the month. Sarah wrote, “Thank you so much. Your support means the world to the people of the Pantry.”
