Meet The Cambridge Pantry’s Heroes, Denny, Tony And Frank: And Today’s News: Babies Need Diapers, No. 5 and 6.

by Jon Katz

Thanks for the Peanut Butter and peas. Today, the Pantry is out of diapers sizes 5 & 6. Babies come first. This week, the Pantry faces its toughest challenge. The Food Bank is struggling and can offer little help.

We will do our best to help. The Pantry’s food budget is less than $300.

Sarah’s requests for today, Wednesday, August 19:

Chicken Pot Pie Soup (Pack of 8), $17.20.

Campbell’s Chunky Soup (Case of 8), $17.20.

Campbell’s Chili Mac Soup (Case of 8), $17.20.

URGENTLY: We are out of these diapers:

Trial Pack Baby Diapers Size 5, Nineteen Count, $9.99.

Pampers Diapers Size 6, $9.97.

______

Food banks and Food Pantries are struggling all over the place. I have great faith in the Pantry volunteers and the people. They embody the true American spirit – courage, honesty, and compassion for neighbors.

All help is appreciated; the Pantry expects this coming week to be its toughest yet.

“We have great volunteers,” says Sarah. “My truck crew (photos above) is also my emergency fix-it crew; when something breaks at the Pantry, they volunteer to do all the repairs. They also fix any electrical problems.”

Sarah says Denny, Tony, and Frank even put in a new mailbox, cleared the brush from around the property, and fixed the freezers so that the doors would open properly. This saves the Pantry from the high cost of repairs. On the same day, they said they drove out to the Feed Bank and then emptied the truck by hand when they returned.’

They seem like heroes to me; if they are needed, they just come running and do it at no cost.

There are a lot of heroes at the Pansion, but these are rarely seen in the outside world.

More heroes unloading all the boxes. They are not quitters.

More Heroes: Farmers and Gardeners rush to the aid of the Cambridge Food Pantry. Their community is behind them. “They are always there for us,” emailed a resident, “we will try to be there for them. But it is not a wealthy town.” Maybe not, but there are a lot of good hearts there. They will help them get through.

_______

I told Sarah we would do whatever we can do and will stand with her and the Food Pantry. One big thing we can do today is send some diapers, sizes five and six. It’s almost impossible to stock. I wish Sarah the best of luck in a rough week. As assistance drops, traffic goes up. Americans are hurting. Food pantries and food banks face a severe worsening crisis driven by a historic combination of soaring demand, reduced federal nutrition funding, and deep cuts to government food assistance programs.

Common Dreams reports that “freezers are getting empty,” and food banks and pantries are struggling as SNAP cuts tear through community after community. The Cambridge Food Pantry is struggling. We are helping as best we can.

We are supporting the Pantry in every way possible. The Pantry Amazon Wish List is available day or night for independent browsing. Thanks so much for helping.

If you wish, you can help the Cambridge Food Pantry any time, day or night. Every item on the list is urgently needed. Items are removed as soon as the Pantry has enough of them to put on the shelves.

Almost all of these items were requested by the people coming to the Pantry for food.

Feel free to visit the Wish List at any time to choose your own contribution. Please don’t send me money. Amazon is the most efficient option for the Pantry and the quickest way to respond. And thank you again.

Note: In July, the Army of Good donated 1,579 lbs of items for the Cambridge Pantry. That was 200 lbs more than the month before, and it looks like it will be even more for August, halfway through the month. Sarah wrote, “Thank you so much. Your support means the world to the people of the Pantry.”
