A Poem: The Peace Of Wild Things, By Wendell Berry. For Maria.

The Peace of Wild Things By Wendell Berry

______

“When despair for the world grows in me, and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.“

By Wendell Berry.

  2. I’ve been moved, inspired and instructed by Wendell Berry’s books, essays and poems for decades, taken into such different places and times and deeply rooted communities so unlike the newly built 50s-60s suburbs full of strangers where I grew up. I was sad but grateful to read that he had recently passed peacefully at his beloved home farm at 92. His writings stirred and challenged so many of us to look at so-called progress and modernity with more critical eyes in ways that our educations did not, asking “What Are People For?” and bringing us into his communion with the natural world. His life and works are a grest blessing and solace, and a call to action on so many fronts facing us now. May peace be with you, Wendell Berry, and thank you with all my heart.

  3. Like a drink of cool water and a shade tree on a hot day. How much we need these words in the midst of turmoil and tumult. Thank you.
