13 September

Flower Art, Sunday, the 13th, September, 2026. Honoring Wendell Berry’s “Sabbath Poems.” R.I.P.

by Jon Katz

“Now, surely, I am getting old,

for my memory of myself
as a young man seems now
to be complete, as a story told.
The young man leaps, and lands
on an old man’s legs.”

“I would not have been a poet
except that I have been in love
alive in this mortal world . . .”

  1. Wendell Berry’s writing, whether novels, short stories, poetry, essays, often, for me, has a depth born of observation, reflection, and connection arising from his communitarian ethic. It often leaves me with a deeper sense of myself. Honest reflection, as you share with us, Jon, will do that.
