Cambridge Pantry Support: Cereal Again And Oatmeal

by Jon Katz

Monday’s request for help: cereal for the Pantry and the children’s Backpack Program for weekend food; please choose if you can. The cereal shelves are empty again.

Reese’s Puff Chocolatey Peanut Butter Breakfast Cereal, Whole Grain, $2.37.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Breakfast Cereal, $2.97.

Cheerios Honey Nut Breakfast Cereal, Gluten Free, 226 whole grain, $2.97.

Quaker Oatmeal Squares Breakfast Cereal, Brown Sugar, (3 Pack), $11.97.

Honey Bunches of Oats Granola Crunches (2 Pack), $5.95.

Favorites: Trouble cereal is here again. Sarah is also hoping for help with two kinds of breakfast cereal (I ordered five more): Oatmeal Squares cereal for the cooling weather. Most cereals are very low-priced.

The response to the weekend’s request for help with Velveeta shells, Poligrip, and Colgate toothpaste was apparently successful, but they won’t have the numbers or details for a day or two.

Cereal is a continuing issue for the Pantry in the new reality; the Army of Good has been wonderful in helping. So we are asking again. The Food Bank isn’t sending any for now. It’s not likely to get better soon.

We are about so much more than money and politics. We care for others and help them when they need it.

Thank you again and again for your wonderful donations and for doing good; you can also find them through the Cambridge Pantry Wish List. Sarah calls these foods “heat and eat” items; they are extremely popular at this time of year.

These are rough days for the Food Pantry, but we are keeping the best foods coming. Everyone is still smiling.

Yesterday’s urgent requests:

Poligrip Free Centure Adhesive Cream (4 Pack), $18.48.

Colgate Cavity Protection, Fluoride Mint Toothpaste, (6 Pack), $10.78.

______

These items mean a lot to families and the elderly, and the Pantry can’t afford to buy any. Thanks as always for your support. The Pantry volunteers are having a rough time, but I haven’t heard a complaint.

The Food Bank can no longer provide them with many items, and the shelves are frequently empty.

These are tough weeks for all Food Pantries, but our work with them has since become one of the most meaningful and hopeful experiences for the Army of Good and me.

We are holding our own,  thanks mostly to good people. The Army of Good has been nothing less than heroic.

There are no simple days now and no easy ones.

So far, we have provided every item we have been asked to stock. This is a small but wonderful miracle, an assertion of good hearts and empathy. This is the true heart of Americans.

You bring hope and compassion to this Pantry, this community, and people across the country. There are not enough words to show gratitude for what the Army of Good is doing. The Pantry volunteers are amazing. The two groups are working beautifully together.

Sarah is doing a wonderful job keeping the Pantry serving its customers as best she can. We hope to get some cereal this week, a sadly familiar food item the Pantry can no longer afford to buy.

Check out the Amazon Pantry Wish List if you can. They need everything on it.
