A myth about President Trump is falling apart before our very eyes. He’s not that smart. His performance in Dallas is now a major Internet hit, and none of it is good.
At his strange convention in Dallas, the President of the United States shocked the world yet again by making it clear he wasn’t just fighting to win a political campaign.
He is planning a coup d’etat and very foolishly announced his true intent: he urged his followers to revolt (once again) and lie about their votes to seize control of the coming election and the government.
His command that his followers should cheat along with him makes it clear. John Adams is throwing himself under a bridge.
It didn’t work the last time Trump was in an election, and it seems that people have finally learned the truth about him the hard way – their pockets and illnesses.
I almost expected George Washington to show up in Dallas on his beautiful horse and drag the President away from the cameras.
The world seems upside down at times. All those Jesus lovers in the Trump movement would get their tables knocked over if he returned.
You are blowing another one, Mr. President. We now can brace ourselves and plan a response. We can get the lawyers and the young voters together along with every true patriot. And there are a lot more of us than you and your followers.
I have a hunch that Mr. Trump is about to get a lesson in patriotism and statistics. He keeps telling us he is brilliant, the most brilliant President ever, yet it is clearer by the day that he is becoming the dumbest and least competent President ever.
He appears unwell.
I’m not a hater, and I don’t hate him, but somebody needs to tell him he will be outnumbered, outthought, and outjudged in a flash in January. We are just not ready to be enslaved or dominated.
For one thing, takeovers in human history aren’t announced on TV or weeks in advance, giving enraged people, mayors, lawyers, governors, senators, journalists, students, and judges plenty of time to show up and get ready.
His ravings (and ratings) don’t show how strong he is; they show how weak he is. The kindest thing I could say to him – one older man to another – is that he seems to be suffering from Dementia, not the dread Muslims or Democrats.
Trump lives in his own bubble and doesn’t seem to know yet that he is the most disliked President in American History. He lives in a series of delusions. He has also revealed himself as a coward and a bungler.
His desperate $5,000 bribe about the election was a national joke, a sign of weakness; nobody was seen trembling. Nobody who was paying attention believed it for a second.
One thing we know about cowards: they never stand and fight against serious odds. They run. Trump is breaking records on failure, chaos, arrogance, and ignorance. I admit to thinking he was smarter than that. I admit to thinking he was better than that.
I spent a few hours this morning studying coups; most of them have failed. I couldn’t help noticing this one in Spain. Known as 23-F, a group of Civil Guard officers led by Antonio Tejero stormed the Cortes (parliament) with guns drawn, live on TV. King Juan Carlos went on television that night denouncing the coup, and it fell apart by the next morning.
Coups like this are not TV or social media events. I know of no Coup attempts in history – there have been many – that were announced months ahead of the takeover.
I could feel the shock and rage over his declaration all the way up to my farm in upstate New York.
We not only know what he is planning, but we also know the date: January 3, 2027, when Congress is supposed to accept the election winners, and the Speaker of the House has also announced he won’t let them in.
That is a coup. We thought all along that those obedient senators and legislators were just weak. The truth is they also want to take over, not serve or share.
Mike Johnson will also ignore the Constitution and support the coup because he will “never allow Democrats (or voters) to take over the House of Representatives.
He is also planning a Coup De ‘Eta, defined as a sudden, illegal seizure of power in a government, typically carried out by a small group rather than through election or constitutional succession.
This may be the first coup in history to warn everyone that they are being taken over. The list of failed Trump orders, commands, and ideas (the newest bungle is the illegal promise of $5,000 to every man (not woman) in the country only if the Democrats are defeated. My guess is he thought that since he would control the country, he could order it.
Successful coups are usually fast and a surprise — planned in private and sometimes resolved within hours or days — and frequently involve seizing control of key infrastructure like television/radio stations, government buildings, and military command centers.
The Trump watchers believe he plans to use the wildly hated and also incompetent ICE as his soldiers. Americans are fighting ICE officers all across the country. They will be ready.
Here’s why it won’t work. Trump is terrified, not some traitorous but brave General seeking power in a country with a history of takeovers and failed revolutions.
He’s a champion liar, entertainer, and bullshitter, not a warrior. He got out of fighting in Vietnam fast enough. Now he’s a super King.
The United States, for all of its troubles, is different. Since its inception, it has never been dominated that way. We are not used to it.
Trump is a failure as an Evil King. From the war in Iran to mud in his Lincoln Center swap to his signs in the Kennedy Center, his failing efforts to jail all of his critics and imagined opponents, Trump is a genius at starting things he can’t finish and writing useless paper orders.
The only thing he has proven to be good at is the torture, cruelty, and increasingly un-American efforts to rid America of people who are not white.
Vast armies of Americans, young and old, have been alerted and are planning responses. While he works on his ballroom, arches, and signs, millions of Americans are openly rallying against him. And not on social media, but at voting places.
They are smarter than the thugs and loons he has placed in our government and have much more to lose than the billionnaires and thieves running the nation. Just look at the candidates all over the country who are rising already – call it a counter-coup.

Trump is sometimes compared to Hitler; I don’t go that far. But it’s good to remember that a citizen-made grand jury or federal judges never blocked Hitler.
With Trump in charge, efficiency and common sense are gone all the time.
In America, when the Trump administration bullied a late-night comedian like Jimmy Kimmel into not interviewing James Talarico on a network, they don’t fret.
They just went on YouTube and drew millions of visitors – in this case, nearly ten times more readers than on the TV show. Everything Trump seems to do blows up in his face; his acolytes are almost universally incompetent. Go Kimmel.
In America, left and right, people don’t give up their freedom of speech easily. Only rich media outlets do that.
How does the President expect to control millions of furious citizens, deprived of their votes and freedom?
Even the government isn’t big enough to get all of them. The Internet is our new media and freedom, for all of its faults. Social media is also a champion of independent commentators and journalists.
Right now, YouTube is the most powerful media source in the country. Nobody has controlled it or is likely to.
Mr. Trump is awakening his own kind of coup: his opponents aren’t announcing their revolution on Facebook and social media; they are organizing, winning, and connecting with Americans all over the country, blue and red.
There is no going back to the last century or two. Americans have had enough. So has the rest of the world.
Trump’s world is disintegrating all around him. We saw it live on TV.
The Supreme Court has enabled him and let him run wild over our Constitution, but they are clearly willing to stand up to him when he goes way and way too far.
I imagine they are well aware that if a Trump coup ever occurred, they are in the very last place a free person – especially a judge – would want to be.

Precise, insightful summary. Staying (or becoming) content, peaceable, communitarian, loving, and kind in the face of all of this has been no small challenge. Doing good, as you do and as you encourage us to do likewise, remains quite an important tool with which to meet the challenge.
