The Cambridge Food Pantry: “We Are Stocked With Diapers And Wipes!, Thanks From Mothers: Three Next Salads…$2.59.

by Jon Katz

Two days ago, the Pantry was out of baby diapers and wipes. Thanks to your generosity, we now have both items stacked and ready. Thanks. The mothers and fathers coming to the Food Pantry today will breathe a sigh of relief; the mothers won’t have to choose between diapers and what’s left of their paychecks. You did a lot of good this week.

Today, in pursuit of healthy eating, Sarah is seeking help with salad dressings; they help families love and want salads.

The baby wipes have arrived. Thanks. The shelf was empty two days ago.

The Pantry volunteers are still unpacking and sorting the avalanche of support you sent over the weekend, including the baby diapers and wipes. Thank you, thank you; you saved what looked like a lot of empty shelves for the week.  Sometimes the Pantry needs only three or four items to fill its shelves for two or three days. We did better than that, thanks.

A Feeding America report covering Eastern NY (including the Pantry’s area) put it more starkly: 1 in 6 kids — over 98,000 children — are food insecure, and the reason that’s repeatedly cited is federal SNAP cuts, with the Regional Food Bank CEO estimating 44% of people currently facing hunger locally could lose SNAP eligibility. That’s pushing more families toward pantries, just as USDA product supplies to food banks won’t be enough. More cuts were announced yesterday.

New: According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Diesel Fuel in the Northeast is averaging about $6.50 a gallon.

This will significantly affect traffic to food pantries throughout the area, including this one; it is already driving more and more people to food pantries. Farmers and truck traffic are both especially hard hit.

Like the Pantry, we are adapting to the reality. Every day will be harder for a while. We won’t lose hope. They certainly won’t.

We are on a roll, stacking more than 27 items in recent weeks that the Food Bank and the Pantry could not afford. We are focusing on one or two at a time. Today, Sarah needs help getting dressings, which are essential for the family to eat healthy salads.

Thank you; you are pouring out generosity like a geyser. Over the weekend, it was canned Corn. Today, Salad dressings $2.59.
