Sue Silverstein, News From The Art Room: “We Are Catching Fire, Thanks For Helping”

by Jon Katz
Thanks for helping Sue Silverstein and her young artists. I don’t know of a better cause, a better way to spend money, or a better person to use it well. As you can see, your contributions are already making some beautiful art.  If there is a heaven, you’re on the way. -Jon Katz.

 Sue Silverstein:
It has been sweater weather this week. People joke about the climate here because we often have big changes in short periods. We’re in Fools Fall now because it could be 90 again in two weeks. A lot of the kids are sick; after a few weeks in close quarters again, germs have a party.
We found our rhythm again! Beautiful art is happening again. Life is good in the art room. We won’t talk about the fact that I dropped a box of 1000 beads yesterday, right before Meet the Teacher night was supposed to happen.

Those things travel on a waxed floor. The kids jumped right in to help me clean it up.
My furniture crew is working on refinishing a table. They have plans to incorporate some old license plates into the final product. I am interested in seeing how that works.

The eighth-grade kids have been learning about Kinetic art and have been creating Agamographs. What a fabulous idea to lead with a project that requires precise mathematical measurements. After two weeks, they are finally coming together, and the students have deemed them “cool” because the images really do change depending on your vantage point. Note to self: maybe this project will be a bit later in the semester next time…

Studio Art is working on creating images with discarded puzzle pieces. Thanks to everyone who sent them along last year! It took them a minute to catch the idea, but they are on it now, and there are bags of sorted colors all over the room. Hopefully, pictures next week. I am still looking for bottle caps and watch parts, too.
Gemma and Sophia wanted to make a banana split using some of the donated glassware. They have had way too much fun this week putting it together! They created the ice cream with recycled pillow stuffing, clear glue, and a few drops of paint. The bananas are painted mattress foam.

Molly, a creative spirit with a fabulous imagination, is using recycled jewelry to fashion her Egyptian-like head form. Molly is an artist who fully immerses herself in a project, ensuring every detail is perfect. I often tell the painting and drawing kids that every detail matters, and one weak area can wreck the whole work of art. Molly never leaves a weak spot in her work. She’s looking for interesting jewelry if you have any around!
Tashauna is working on a great parrot painting that she started over the summer with supplies she took home. The tail is my favorite part!

This week’s Kathy’s box had a football theme with all things football, just as the season gets underway. I really don’t know how she does it. The students argue over who gets to go upstairs on Tuesdays when the mail comes. Of course they love cookies, too! Thank you, Kathy.
Thank you to Lynne from NJ for the bags to help us out with the food Pantry.
Thank you, Paula, from CA, for the crystals and books full of project ideas!
_______
Thank you to Deanna from Fl, for the maps and the donation of healthy snacks. Such a blessing, with grocery costs through the roof right now.
Thank you to everyone who supports us all the time. We are blessed beyond measure by the Army of Good.

Proctors Theatre of Schenectady has blessed us again this year, and the students’ work is on display. This is the third year they have been so kind and supportive of our program, and we are beyond grateful. If you are in the area, they are located at 432 State St., Schenectady, NY 12305. We thank Kelly Auricchio for her constant support.
I love hearing from you. My email is [email protected].
Have a blessed day!
Sue
