News From The Art Room, Sue Silverstein: A Super Busy Week

by Jon Katz
Sue’s class has become a national wonder; donations, art supplies, discarded clothes and jewels, and ideas come in from all over the country. People are good, given the chance. These kids are worth it, and thanks…Jon.

News from the Art Room – October Already!
______
We have been super busy this week. Lots of great, big, messy-to-make, beautiful-to-behold art is happening all over the room. Even Art Club has been really busy, with many 6th grade students coming most days. One little girl came yesterday for the first time. 6th grade has no room in their schedules to take art. She was looking around at all the projects underway and said, “It’s all so beautiful; I want to make everything.” One of the teachers was ill the other day, and I covered her class.

I brought the students to the art room and let them work on a drawing packet that I set aside for extra practice. I learned a few things. They have a lot of energy, and there are a bunch of crazy-talented kids in the class. Long story short, they’ve started coming to Art Club and doing nice work so far.
The puzzle-piece mixed-media creations are cute. They often use materials I don’t expect, and their finished work is even more interesting.
Samantha has been working on a puppet during Art Club and class for two weeks. She is simply joyful when she is making art of any sort. She’s a builder and loves to make things out of just about anything she can find. I love her imagination.

We were talking the other day, and she told me an art teacher at a previous school would not allow her to participate in their art club. She was told her art wasn’t suitable enough to belong. I think she was eleven. I would personally like to plaster photos of her work on the front page of the paper and see how many people tell her how awesome she is. Enough said….

Molly finished her Egyptian-inspired head. I love it; I wish I had enough of those Styrofoam heads for a whole class to do that project. Molly has it all: creativity, talent, attention to detail, and patience.
I am currently looking for bottle caps, watch parts, and jewelry. Of course, we always appreciate art supplies of any sort and healthy snacks for hungry kids!
This week’s Kathy box had a fall theme full of lovely autumn colors. There were leaves, socks, pajama pants, paints, and so much more! Thank you, Kathy! The cookies were amazing as well!

Proctors Theatre of Schenectady has blessed us again this year, and the students’ work is on display. This is the third year they have been so kind and supportive of our program, and we are beyond grateful. If you are in the area, they are located at 432 State St., Schenectady, NY 12305. We thank Kelly Auricchio for her constant support.
We love to hear from you; I read the notes to the students and post them on the walls in the art room.
I love hearing from you. My email is [email protected].
Have a blessed day!
Sue
