Jennifer Weiner is a best-selling author of great skill; she is best, I think when writing about family and the dramas within. This review got me to buy the book, it was dead on. The book sold quickly when we offered it on Sunday, but the buyer disappeared, so it’s up for sale again.

This is a terrific novel about a young woman’s empowerment, love, family struggles, friendship, and love. The book is called The Breakaway, which is what our heroine is trying to do.

The other book we are offering for sale today pains me a bit to sell, but it’s time. The late and legendary P.D. James wrote the book. It’s an Adam Dalgleish (my favorite) mystery). James’s books (also Vera and Shetland) are my favorite mysteries; they are literature more than mystery. In this one, she creates her world with detail, and her great detective, Adam Dalgliesh, her brilliant and unflappable hero.

They need to be read by people who love literature but not the new prices of most hardcover books.

Today (Sunday) Bedlam Farm Book Sales are offering five very good books at a very low price. We’re de-cluttering big time. In addition to making some money, Maria and I like the idea of giving something back to our readers and supporters. No one will get rich selling $10 books (plus shipping) but the response has been amazing. And new hardcover books cost a lot more than $10.

This is something people want and need, and it’s something that makes us feel proud and generous. Love adventure and biography are on the list today.

I’ve always loved buying new books – I’ll never give it up – and hate the idea of books lying around the house gathering dust. Maria and I are both obsessive readers.

The book sales are permanent, with no returns.

Five books today: The Unthinkable Greta James, a novel by Jennifer Smith, a kind of father-daughter love story,  it features Greta, a singer who falls apart on stage and breaks down. Months later, she links up with her disapproving father for a cruise they both hope will bring her back to health. The book is gorgeous, warm, funny, and touching.

Second, The Breakaway by Jennifer Weiner is an engaging and heart-lifting book about a troubled and struggling daughter, a shaming mother, and a determined lover. Our hero ends up on a 700-mile bike trip with his mother and lover both unexpectedly along. The question is can they ever get along with one another again? A good read.

Third,  Our Share Of Night by Mariana Enriquez, one of Latin America’s hottest young writers. This is an amazing author in the Gabriel Garcia Marquez (my favorite author) tradition. The book is mystical beautiful, disturbing, and hypnotic – a genre in South America.

A young father and son set, united in grief over the death of the wife and mother they loved, travel to her ancestral home where they both must confront the terrifying legacy she has left – a clan, a centuries-old secret society called the Order that commits unspeakable acts in their search for eternal life.

It’s a nail-biter at times, but hard to put down and well worth the time. This is real literature, 584  pages long, a journey into an imagined world, a big theme in Latin America. Great stuff.

Fourth: Henry David Thoreau, A Life. A thorough, surprising, and beautiful biography of  Thoreau, a fierce individualist, the author of “Walden,’ and a great American thinker. It’s 600 pages long. I had no trouble getting to the end. I imagine you all know who Thoreau is.

Fifth: Young Mungo, by Booker Prize Winner Douglas Stuart. This is a gripping and wonderfully told story of queer love and working-class poverty. Stuart is one of England’s greatest up-and-coming authors.

I recommend the book highly, it is wrenching and brutally realistic. Also inspiring. I would describe it as a very vivid and unyielding portrait of urban poverty and the suspenseful story of this dangerous first love of two young men.

We are very happy with the Book Sale program and we have tons (literally) of books to sell, good books that we have read almost all just like new.

Abraham Verghese’s beautiful novel Cutting For Stone is about a medical family and their lives and struggles in Ethiopia.

Margaret Atwood needs no explanation; her collection of short stories – Old Babes In The Woods –  is as surprising and mesmerizing as so much of her writing is.

The Paper Palace is a best-selling work of literary and women’s fiction by Miranda Cowley Heller about secrets, love, lies, and the hard choices of a woman’s life.

Killingly is a grim novel Based on the unsolved real-life disappearance of a Mount Holyoke student in 1897. Katherine Beutner’s Killingly, said the New York Times,  weaves a haunting spell of intrigue, longing, and terror.

Raging Storm by the popular Ann Cleeves (Vera, Shetland)  is a Mathew Venn mystery; it’s classy and fast-moving, as all of Cleeve’s books are. It is suspenseful without being bloody or awful. Venn is Cleeve’s first gay detective.

I’m thinking of selling some of the beautiful dog and animal books I used to research and write my books about dogs and cats and other animals and animal and human attachment theory, a longtime interest of mine. Some of the books deal with training and knowledgeable studies about how dogs think if anything, and what they feel. They are valuable to animal lovers.

The books are marked with my notes and circling; some pages have been turned down. Otherwise, the books are in excellent and readable shape. They would be helpful to anyone interested in learning about animals, their thinking, intelligence, aggressiveness, and ways of training and communicating. I have many of them, and they are all in excellent condition.

We are working on pricing.

I no longer need these books; they were used for research for my books.

They are the best and most accessible books on pets and other animals. It’s up to Maria, but we’ll soon pick a date to sell some of those books and see how it goes. I have shelves of them. I’m also looking to sell some of my spiritual books and guides.

We offered six new books for the Bedlam Farm Book Sale today. In case you’ve been elsewhere,  we have a lot of books we have loved and read, and rather than then away, we have decided to sell them at the lowest possible rate that we can afford – $10 plus $5 shipping.

We’re happy about this. In addition to getting some money – we’re only selling books we like a lot. This makes everyone happy – our readers get great books much cheaper than the retail cost, we get paid, and books go on to live happy and meaningful lines. We also bring a lot of clutter out of the farmhouse.

And I love the idea of the books. I love going out to a blog reader and, hopefully, a book reader.

Today’s first book is by Katrine Enberg, one of Europe’s best-selling new female mystery writers, The Sanctuary. You will hear a lot from her if you like mysteries and relish the great books women are turning out now that they can.

The book retailed for $28.99. I know, I bought it.

Also, White Cat and Black Dog are beautifully written short stories by Kelly Link.

And the second Hotel Maid mystery by Nita Prose. The first “Maid” mystery was a huge success; this one is just as good. It’s a gentle, very original mystery hero. Hotel Maid Molly Gray is a gripper and a heart lifter. I can’t wait for paperbacks.

I bought this lovely mystery for $29.00. Almost all the books we sell were purchased in the $20-30 range. I’m strange that way, perhaps because I was a book writer for so long.

And The Fury, by Alex Michaelides, best-selling author of The Maidens. This is a juicy mystery with plenty of twists and turns, but it never gets sorry or disturbing. It was a pleasure, and blessedly, it is not 400 pages.

The biggest of the books is Daniel Lewis’s Josephine Baker: American Hero, French Hero, British Spy, the fascinating story of singer and entertainer Josephine Baker, who left the United States to live and perform in Paris and become a brave and highly successful British Spy during World War II.

It is one of those fantastic stories, previously untold, locked away in top-secret cabinets. The book is also 460 pages; I read it to the end. I have trouble with books this long; this one was worth it. I bought the book for $40. Her story is remarkable.

The last book sold today is Diary Of A Misfit by Casey Parks. It’s a haunting and compelling story of a woman who lives like a man and the gay child across the street who captures the woman’s life. The book is a memoir and a mystery. But it’s not a murder mystery, a culture mystery, and a timely one.

We’re selling it for $10 plus $5 shipping. That will be the price of just about every book unless there are some exceptional circumstances. We are not a bookstore or an Amazon competitor. We only have one copy of any of these books.

I liked every one of them; Maria read most of them. Reading is our favorite thing to do, along with museums.
