Today, My Birthday Celebration, One Of The First In 79 Years.

by Jon Katz

Birthdays are usually just another day for me. Maybe something more this time. Aging brings gratitude, and I am grateful to be alive in this curious world. I have a birthday present in mind. See below.

________

_______

I don’t celebrate birthdays unless they are Maria’s, but I have agreed to celebrate this one – 79 years of life – at the Inn we went to for our honeymoon a few years ago. I’ll be gone for the rest of the day, back around lunchtime tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it.

I never ask for birthday presents and see my birthday – August 8th – as just another day. But I did have this idea. If anyone out there wanted to celebrate my birthday, I would welcome it, helping the Cambridge Food Pantry hold the line by sending some food. Their Wish Lists are full of choices. And thanks. It’s the perfect “Happy Birthday” wish for me.

My work with the Pantry and its remarkable volunteers has kept my faith in humanity during all of the sad turmoil. There are no haters there. They are keeping good alive.

Have a great day.

Mr. Trump Just Woke God Up As Well As The Rest Of Us. Not Wise.

by Jon Katz

A sociopath is a clinical term for someone with an Antrisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD), characterized by a disregard for social norms, law, and the rights of others. They often exhibit a lack of empathy, guilt, or remorse, alongside manipulative and impulsive behavior. They may appear charming, but are often volatile and irresponsible. They frequently lie or use charm to exploit others for personal gain. They have difficulty understanding or caring about others’ feelings and pain.

— An AI Overview.

___

At times this year I found myself wondering if there was a God where was he? President Trump has answered the question. He woke God up.

I’m not a professional, but if I understand the implications of this illness, then surely my ex-colleagues in the media and every person elected to Congress understand it as well.

Shame on them for not exposing this understanding. Shame on me, and on millions of others, for not seeing it earlier.

The photo above is an AI false creation that President Trump posted on his My Truth website last night after his inevitable assault on Pope Leo, the first American Pope and the leader and past of the three and a half billion Catholic worshippers in the world.

Pope Leo dared to criticize killing people as an alternative to something better. President Trump told the usual pack of journalist syncophants that Pope Leo just wasn’t his kind of Pope.

This is one of the few truths he has spoken lately.

I feel empathy for this President; there is no sane reason for drawing anyone’s God into the global and political quagmire he is trying to get out of, let alone someone as worshipped as a Pope.

I guess since he is his own God now, he needs not worry.

If the diagnosis is true, he can’t help himself. Hating him is pointless. Understanding is essential. The AI picture is how our President sees himself—a new Jesus for America.

Even a few sycophants spoke out in defense of the Pope. God does perform miracles.

According to the Catholic Church, Pope Leo speaks with St Peter, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and one of the first leaders of the early Christian Church. He appears repeatedly and prominently in all four New Testaments.

As Pope, Leo takes his oath to follow the Gospel, the teachings of Christ seriously, unlike many Christians in America. He reminds us that killing people is not a nod to Jesus or an understanding of his beliefs.

The President dismissed and consulted the Pope in his usual unhinged way, suggesting he was too liberal and soft on crime to function as his kind of Pope.

He doesn’t seem to know that he can’t choose.

Trump then posted above on his website this anonymous AI image of himself cast as a new Jesus, doing what Jesus is said to have done over and over again – care for the sick and needy, something the President actually dismisses as “woke” and “weak.”

The Western world breathed a sigh of relief, one felt all over the world. The President also woke God up and made a few billion more enemies, a decision that will shake up the world as well as the United States.

If Mr. Trump has a genius for coming back, he has an even bigger one for blowing himself up. I choose sadness, not hate. He’s plummeting.

Yesterday, he also lost a global leader and inspiration of the MAGA movement in Hungary, Viktor Orbán, a friend of Vladimir Putin.

Was it really, I wonder, a good night to assault the Pastor of the Catholic Church?

I am not a Christian worshipper, but I am also deeply inspired by the work of Christ and by the courage and honesty of the new Pope.

He reminds me of Americans before Mr. Trump was elected President. He does not fear any politician or the blasphemer Mr. Trump has become while hiding behind the Christian Evangelical Movement.

A British friend texted me to say people there will never count on Americans again to elect a President they can trust. It hurt to hear that.

Messages For The Soul. We Are Contagious. The Worse They Get, The Better We Get. When Hatred Hides…

by Jon Katz

Cruelty and hatred outside make me stronger and better inside. That surprises me and sometimes confounds me: today, some more messages from good people with caring hearts.

It is the best way I’ve ever had to start the day. It’s fuel for my soul, medicine for the heart.

It reminds me every day that people are good. Every day, when those Amazon trucks arrive with food for the food pantry, or we send art supplies to high school kids, I am inspired by what humanity means and can be. Thanks for these messages. It truly reflects what social media could be and what is inside the hearts of so many human beings.  This is what we are and what we wish to be.

I think of Dracula fleeing wolfsbane in the story, when people do good, hatred retreats and diminishes every minute. Love and concern are contagious. We have the best kind of work to do. We are in good company, and there are more of us than you might think from watching what is called the news. Hatred rots away, love lives.

___________

The messages today:

D: Jon. Every word you write is a word I would write… if I had your talent to express so beautifully and succinctly. Thank you. It is a treasure to know I’m not the only one with these thoughts. Aging is a challenge, but each morning, I wake up thinking…I want to be a positive influence in someone’s life, just like you and Maria – love, caring, and concern. I hope that a straightforward smile may be contagious and will make someone else smile. Thanks.

A beautiful use of words and feelings, K , Thank you. You made me smile.

___________

K: I love starting my morning peacefully with your words and photos, Jon. It centers me and gets me excited to go outside (when the sun comes up) and enjoy our little slice of heaven. I loved your post on aging. It speaks of the effort and intention to stay connected as we age, to ebb and to flow with life rather than fighting it. I view retirement as an opportunity to explore all the things I didn’t have time for while working. I love my life, I’ve created connections with like-minded friends, I am making my art, I am physically active, and I am serving and loving my community. That feeling of connection is what literally warms my heart. Humans are meant to be pack animals – we need the pack to feel safe and loved, and to maintain a sense of purpose within it. Thank you for being part of my pack, Jon.

Back at cha, K.

_____

S: ooh……just lovely photos…….I don’t care what you call anything…..I want to savor them with my eyes and soul!

Beautiful, S, thank you.

__________

J: My wife’s hat says “Gulf of Mexico”—a small act of defiance here in NW Florida.

I love your spirit and your wife’s J, thanks. Small acts can make loud noises. There are many ways to fight back without resorting to fighting. I see it every day.

________

Thanks to all of you. I start the day with a warm heart.

Loving More Than The Soured: The Government Bans Truth Every Day. I’m Using My Authority To Bann Hate Language On The Blog

by Jon Katz

I received this message below yesterday from a reader whose comments I have deleted. She is thoughtful, articulate, and valued. I was writing about hate and noticed several messages on my blog that were using hateful language to insult politicians they dislike, in this case, the President.

____________

A valued reader to me, I won’t use her name: “My first reaction to your statement that maybe hate is just soured love was immediate disagreement–because I have never at any point in time felt anything remotely positive, let alone love, for the current trash that lives in the White House. But on reflection, maybe you’re right, Jon. Maybe my deep love for my country has been turned into hate for the one who has soiled it–has turned it into a garbage pit. Nothing has surprised me in the least about what I’m seeing — I had him correctly sized up from the start, back in 2016. What makes me despair is the people who are either still blind to it or don’t care, or are owned by pure self-interest and fall in line.”

_____________

I should have shared my decision earlier to block any message that slips into name-calling rather than thought. Some people are unaware of doing it.

I don’t care who people like or dislike, but this blog is what I call a sanctuary, a place where there is no hostility, no hatred, and no name-calling (not from me, either).

As the anger and fear grow at the constant chipping away of our democracy, I notice some intelligent and interesting readers are slipping into hate language.

I don’t blame them, but I don’t want that on the blog. Imagine what it would be like if everyone on either side started using hostile language, and I were to publish it. (I used to do that).

That doesn’t go with Pastoral art or flower pictures.

We tried that, and much of the country is doing it; it was a nightmare for me when I did it.

Anyone is welcome here, regardless of their color, orientation, or purpose. You are all free to like or dislike me and my thoughts, as well as those of others and their thoughts.

But no hostility, please, no insults. I’ll delete it. Feel free to share what you think, not who you hate. That isn’t anybody else’s business.

As I said, this is a reader I greatly respect and appreciate for her intelligence and perspective.  She has important things to say. But I already got some hate messages directed at her because of the hate she directed at him.  I don’t want those messages on the blog. Many of the people who read the blog are supporters of him and are distressed to see someone they love assaulted verbally.

Regardless of my views, that’s not the kind of dialogue I am comfortable with on the blog so I won’t post it. I pledged to provide a safe place and am committed to maintaining it.

People who disagree are welcome, but I will not post any messages that use derogatory names for me or anyone else.

I just wanted people to know that.

Calling someone trash might or not be true, but thinking someone as thoughtful as this reader might consider simply saying what it is that she dislikes so much about him without calling him “trash,” a common tactic to ensure that any of his followers, more than half of the country, will get angrier and more divisive.

There are enough people working day and night to divide us. I don’t want to be one of them.

These are rough times; somewhere online, people have the right to feel safe. I’ve volunteered my blog for that, it seems a good way, and maybe my only way of helping people. It’s my responsibility to keep that promise. I’ve already deleted many hostile messages.

The blog is becoming a place where people can escape ugly rhetoric and focus on what matters, rather than what he did or didn’t do this hour. The President has sucked almost all the space out of our media, making authentic dialogue difficult, if not impossible.

There are more than two sides to our world. I get a lot of messages like this one every day:”

From B: “I am a conservative, but I haven’t watched Fox News in years. They do not represent my beliefs at all. The hate, conspiracy theories and authoritarian ideas which are broadcast on that network are not what normal conservatives believe.”

And not all liberals are deranged terrorists. That’s the problem with labels.  Thanks for the message.

Loving more, that’s what the Pastoral Photos and flower photos are meant to do. I’d like for the thoughtful people on the blog to avoid name-calling here.

I understand the point of the blog now: to feel safe and calming here. That is no small trick I work very hard at it every day.

The chaos out there is something else; I have no control over it, and I won’t succumb to it by hatred and name-calling.

So I’m issuing my own Executive Order today—no more insults on the blog.

Above, Maria found a baby pigeon wandering right up to Zip’s territory.  It sat in her hands for a long while. She got it to a safe place.

Photo Journal, Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Before Dawn, Beautiful Cold, Chilling Cold

by Jon Katz

Maria shoveled out the barn. Even she was cold.

Zip walks me from the house to one of his unique warm spots in the barn. That’s where he likes to have breakfast. Don’t be fooled; that belly is caught on its own.

The yellow sun at dawn surprised me.

The clouds were outstanding. The wind was strong; it was 10 degrees.

Starlings, pests, and parasites of the feeders. They have striking silhouettes.
