Thanks To My Floral Muse Godflower, Sue Lamberti Of The Cambridge Flower Shop. I Owe Her A Lot.

by Jon Katz

Now and then, I have to remind myself to give a bow to my friend and Godflower Sue Lamberti, the co-owner of the Cambridge Flower Shop, and her partner Michael, who are responsible for so many of my favorite flower photographs.

This summer, the erratic weather and brutal heat destroyed most of the flowers in my garden bed. I worried about getting the floral color I wanted. Sue has helped draw thousands of new readers and flower lovers to my blog.

I turned to the wildflowers that Maria was picking for me, as well as the flowers that Sue was getting for me, especially my much-loved Calla Lilies, which were the centerpiece of so many of my favorite photos, including the Flower Art tonight.

Sue, who, with her partner Michael, has done a fantastic job of putting together a very successful and already much-loved flower shop, I go there two or three times a week to chat with Sue and Michael and to see if anything new has arrived that fits my needs.

The two are a riot on their Facebook site. Michael performs a variety of songs and dances in some wild costumes, which have drawn thousands of fans. Sue, who is somewhat shy, is getting into it.

Callas from Sue.

Sue is always looking out for me when the flower delivery truck comes, and she badgers them for fresh Calla’s and other flowers she knows I favor in my photography. Michael has turned out to be a brilliant Facebook marketer, dancing and singing the specials in the store.

They are also very wise about stocking the store with chocolates, baby dolls, vases, and floral arrangements. It’s been a joy to see them put the new store together so successfully. Michael is a lot of fun, and he has a new idea for the story every five minutes.

They both know our small town very well.

I don’t know where she gets her flowers, but they are diverse and colorful and a book to me. I use them for backdrops as well as abstract art mixes.

I will be leaning on her a lot this winter, as I did last winter. I wondered what I would do last winter – I’m very picky about the flowers I use – but Sue reads my mind, flowers the blog, and is right with me or even ahead of me.

I named her my Godflower; she knows just what I need.

Yesterday, she surprised me with a half dozen beautiful, very healthy, colorful, and stylish Callas. I’ve been using them for the last few days. I also get my flowers from a florist who attends the Cambridge Farmers’ Market; I keep forgetting her name and misplacing her card.

But I’m fortunate, there are a lot of beautiful flowers in a small town like this.

And Sue and I have become good friends; she has a wild sense of humor, and there is mischief in her eyes. I never expected a florist shop or its owners to be so much fun.

Flower Art, Sunday, October 6, 2024. Deeper And Deeper, My Nose And New Eyes In Color, Exploring The True Heart And Soul Of Flowers

by Jon Katz

Although the desert bones of New Mexico initially sparked O’Keeffe’s imagination, the region’s majestic landscape, with its unusual geological formations, vivid colors, clarity of light, and exotic vegetation, held her attention for more than four decades. Often, she painted the rocks, cliffs, and mountains in dramatic close-up, just as she had done with her flower subjects.

Note: My new blog and photo art schedule and beautiful morning photos are Monday through Friday, off Saturday, and half-day on Sunday (all morning). See you Monday morning. Saturday will be a day of silence, meditation, and rest. My grandparents would be amazed and delighted if they knew I was honoring a Sabbath, even if it wasn’t about religion. I never did it while they knew me and loved me.

Thanks sun.

Flowers are heart machines, really…

Peering into the heart of things.

Light is everything when it comes to taking pictures of flowers.

Morning Flowers. Nod To Georgia Okkeefe. Voices From My Raised Garden Bed

by Jon Katz

My raised garden bed is coming to life and calling out for attention. Georgia Okeeffe’s ghost shouted out to me, and so here are some of the first flowers from the garden bed in 2024. More to come. Another day of 90-degree-plus heat; this time, I am staying inside (mostly). Here we go again. I’m giving the Leica a rest; I don’t wish to wear it out; the  IPhone 15 Max Pro is back in service in the morning. Flower Art at the end of the day.

I hope they help you start the day right. The picture above is a Calendula; I got a dozen for the garden bed.
