Animals do not need the rituals and ceremony of humans, as Ma was being unceremoniously loaded into Jack Macmillan’s truck, her lamb and the other sheep were already off grazing. By this evening, she will have never existed for them. Still, they were attached to one another in their own way. Animals are our partners, they share the joys and travails of the earth.
