Hail the roofers. Roof’s half on the Bedlam Store

by Jon Katz
Hail the roofers

Hail the roofers, up in the bitter cold all day, and the roof of the Bedlam Corner General Store is nearly half on. Whatever these guys are making it is not enough. For those contributing to the General Store Fund (Marie Mulligan, c/o Glens Falls National Bank, Main Street, Salem, N.Y., 12865), you can see you are getting your money’s worth. The upstairs is a wreck, but the floors and structure are intact.

Bedam Corners Comeback. Appreciating roofers

by Jon Katz
Inside

When you get inside and see the damage, you appreciate not only the firefighters but the roofers and carpenters who get up on high places in freezing weather and do very complex and difficult work. They will get it done, though, you can feel it. The whole town breathed a big sigh of relief to see these men get to work on this very cold morning. I could barely snap the shutter. It’s true what they say, sometimes it takes trouble and tragedy to make us come together and bring out our best. I see today that one day soon the Bedlam Corners General Store will reopen, because a minister cared, because people dug into their pockets and because men like this get up on rooftops in sub-zero weather and get it done.

Bedlam Corners. The comeback begins

by Jon Katz
The restoration begins

The restortion of the Bedlam Corners General Store kicked off with a vengeance today as a bunch of amazing men and women were crawling all over the roof in the bitter cold. This project definitely has the air of something that is going to get done. Looking at these men, I just marvel at how strong and agile they were in single digit temperatures that almost paralyzed my fingers.  I will be keeping track of the restoration and posting photos. Contributions to the restoration of the store, heavily damaged in a fire, can be made by sending checks to Marie Mulligan, c/o Glens Falls National Bank, Main Street, Salem, N.Y., 12865.
