Frieda’s Grooming. Pray for Eileen

by Jon Katz
Frieda's First Grooming

Frieda has never been groomed or bathed by anyone but Maria, and rarely then. She doesn’t really like to be touched or handled by anyone but Maria and me, and that took me about two years. Frieda has lived in the wild – the Adirondacks, run down a deer (but not harmed her) eaten porcupines, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, and most recently, a mouse that crossed her path on the porch. Wednesday, she and I are heading to Muddy Paws in Shushan, N.Y., where groomer Eileen Quackenbush is headquartered. Maria is otherwise occupied, no dummy. For fun, she pulls down trees and shreds them.

Eileen knows her stuff, and I think Frieda will be fine. I will help get her into the tub and stay with her. Wish us luck. Wish Eileen luck.

Ludwig Drug Store, Brooklyn. Creative Spark

by Jon Katz
Creative Spark

The creative spark is sacred to me. I honor the people who let it live and find a way to bring it into their lives. In Brooklyn, the creative spark, the sacred spirit, is everywhere, even in drugstore windows. There is more art in store front windows in Brooklyn than in many towns and in thousands of corporate franchises. The creative spark is our story, our lives, the light in our soul. I believe it is in all of us, and some of us know that, and others have not yet realized it. If you look, it is everywhere.

Chango Macho. Creative Spark from Brooklyn

by Jon Katz

Chango Macho

Stopped at a Botanico on Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn, filled with spirits, potions, candles, Santeria to help with life’s challenges. Bout two candles from John, “Chango Macho: Espiritu de la Buena Suerte,”  “Spirits of Good Luck.” John said the candles were good for writers and artists. He knew I was a writer the second I walked in the door, and we talked a little about publishing, e-books, reviews and good luck.

With publishing in transition, John said, the orange candles would work. I got two. One is right next to my keyboard, and I will light it on the New Year. Positive thinking is one thing, but a little boost an never hurt. I will go see John whenever I am in Brooklyn. He promised to go on my website and check it out.
