Being Red

by Jon Katz
Being Red

Being Red is not a simple thing. He has sheep to move around. Old sheep to watch and guard. New sheep to dog-break. He has a curious human to follow around. He has to wait by the door when I go outside. He rides in the backseat without moving. He visits his friend Rocky. She sees Alisha at the farm stand. Connie and Marilyn at the bookstore. Joyce at Stannard Farms. He cuddles with Maria and plays with Lenore

He is learning how to climb stairs. How to sleep on the floor next to me. He waits by the barnyard gate and is learning to maneuver around the donkeys. He goes to the gas station, greets the attendants. He has figured Frieda out and sits next to her when she naps. People call and ask if they can visit him. Maria says it could have been worse, it could have been a woman.
