Poem: On A Spring Morning, Thinking Of God

by Jon Katz
On A Spring Morning
On A Spring Morning

On a Spring morning,

I came outside at dawn,

and sat down on my  back porch,

to think about God –

which seemed to me a fitting way to start the day.

Near me, I saw three donkeys, they

were gathering by the fence,

where they greet humans every morning.

I saw a small snake moving this way and that,

and a beetle, moving among the flowers in the new garden,

and heard the birds sending text messages to one another

in songbird: “wrms  @ aple tre!”

How great was their energy, their purpose,

them and me, you and me,

each of us awakening freely

to our own inexplicable

and individual and sacred way,.

Was that your big idea, God?

Start The Day Right: Get Your Back Scratched

by Jon Katz
Start The Day Right
Start The Day Right

Start the day right. Get your back scratched. Somebody wrote on Facebook the other day that Maria looks very serene in all of the photographs. I smiled. Maria is Sicilian. She is not serene, except when she is with the animals, brushing donkeys, walking dogs, talking to chickens, scratching the backs of sheep. Zelda is a triumph of human-animal communications, she was a wild animal when she came. Maria’s emotions are on the surface and animals can smell, see and read them. That is how she communicates with them. That is how I communicate with them, in a way that is similiar yet different.
