Strong Women: Deena Chappell

Strong Women

In the past decade or so, a number of strong women have entered my life and made it better and more interesting. My wife is surely one of them, but there are others, and I am happy to introduce them when they appear like prophets, there are more of them, they may save the world yet. Deena Chappell is a gifted musician, she is a singer, she also plays the guitar. She hosts the Open Mike Night at the Round House Cafe, attracts gifted performers (and poets) of all ages

She is an impressive performer in her own right, but she shares my passion for encouraging people to get up and share their work, to come out, she struggles, as many of us do, to live a creative life. That is not simple in a small town in upstate New York, at the end of every open mike night, a can is passed to each table to help pay for the music. This morning, I encountered Deena at the Cambridge Farmer’s Market, she was performing by herself as people shopped for pizza, tomatoes, fruit, produce and bread. Like any professional – musician, artist, author – it doesn’t matter how many people are listening, she sang just as beautifully at the market as she does at Open Mike Night.

I used to be a bit surprised to meet people like Scott Carrino, Athena Burke, Maria or Deena in a small upstate town. I am not any more, the hills are filled with strong men and strong women.

I took her photo there. I admire Deena, she is a generous spirit, an accomplished musician, a fellow encourager. I am happy she has entered my life, I read some poems Friday at the Open Mike Night, I am getting comfortable with it.

New Signed Notecard Series Debut Saturday: Sketches, Lambs, Donkeys, Dogs

by Jon Katz
New Notecard Series
New Notecard Series

I’m happy to report that we are  debuting three new notecard series this Saturday in conjunction with the first 2014 Bedlam Farm Open House. The first, shown above, is a signed Bedlam Farm Animal Series, photos of Simon with a hen on his back, Red watching Zelda, the dignity of the hens, and Fanny trying to disrupt Red. The second is a photo series on our lambing season, Ma, Deb and Jack, Liam and his mother Susie (those are being printed tomorrow.)

The third, an exciting new creative venture from the former girlfriend, a series of her “Every Day Goddess” sketches, they are on sale now on Maria’s website. These sketches and all of the notecards – they are all signed and 5 x 7- will be debuted at the Open House this Saturday and Sunday, then will be sold on Maria’s website.

All of the notecard packs – there are four in each pack – are $20 apiece plus shipping.

We expect this weekend’s Open House to be smaller and quieter then the second one scheduled for Columbus Day in October, a bit more intimate. We are not promoting the event anywhere but on our blogs. I’m sorry but I can’t offer individual directions and accommodations or dining advice to people. All the information you need is available on Maria’s website, go to the events page. Cambridge is a lot of fun to walk around in. Battenkill Books is ready to greet you and offers the best and most recent titles, the Round House Cafe offers good and fresh and inexpensive food. The poet Mary Kellogg will be on hand to read some of her neew poems. Singer Athena Burke is offering a free concert in her studio Saturday night.

We are not able to offer rest room facilities or refreshments, those are  available nearby in Cambridge.  Maria is curating a beautiful art show in her studio – paintings, photographs, potholders, hanging pieces, sketches. I will be giving a talk or two, showing off Red’s sheepherding skills, conducting meet-the-donkey tours in the pasture. You’ll be able to see the sheep and the lambs as well.

George Forss will be taking portraits if people wish them, they will cost somewhere around $100. It’s getting close, we’re getting excited. Bring carrots for the donkeys. Please don’t bring dogs or throw sticks or balls for Lenore
