The New Lens That Captured “The Blue Heron On My Pond”

by Jon Katz
The New Lens

I’m not sure anyone has ever asked me for a photo of a new lens before, let alone a score of people at once. This is a photograph of the new Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens I am trying out. The lens is modeled after the first optic lens used for photography anywhere in the world, the snowflake is actually a plate inserted into the top of the lens that affects the depth of field, background softness and focus.

The camera comes with a dozen such plates,  you put them in and remove them each time you want to change the aperture. Every photograph is a challenge and an adventure, but I am actually learning how light and lenses work, that will greatly affect my photography.

The new lens has special glass, but works something like a pinhole camera. It is a monster to focus, and manage light, but it is worth it when you do.

Thanks for the orders coming in for my photograph, “The Blue Heron On Our Pond,” (below) I am selling this picture, the first time I’ve sold a photograph in five years,it was taken with this new lens. The Heron picture will be a signed and limited edition photograph, it will cost $110 plus the lowest I can charge and cover the costs and make a profit.

I realized that amidst all of the wonderful fund-raising, I better do a little for myself, we are going to New Mexico for a week in October, our first real vacation together. And this photograph is important to me, aside from the fact that I love it, it is a great step forward for me, it speaks about the way creativity works, and the importance of persevering.

Maria wants to sell these photographs, bless her, and we better cap the total if it’s going to be a signed and limited edition print. We will have to go to 50, even 75, and then stop. If you are interested, you can e-mail Maria at [email protected], and thanks for loving this photograph and supporting my creativity.

The brilliant photogapher George Forss is printing up the image as we speak, he is a wonderful printer and he  uses the best archival paper.

This is exciting, I would rather give my photographs away than sell them, but this one is different, it evokes something spiritual and touching, at least for me, and I think, for others. The lens can evoke magic sometimes, something ethereal and soft. If you’re interested, just e-mail [email protected]. More later.
