The Mansion: I Took Some Clothes To The Mansion Today, Then I Took Maria’s Drawing Class. We Drew Birds

by Jon Katz

Maria taught her drawing class at the Mansion this morning, and I decided to go and bring some clothes I bought at a consignment store going out of business. I got blouses, pants, and sweaters for $2 apiece.  Maria brought markers and instructions; she was up half the night planning for the class. She takes it very seriously, as she always takes art. While there, I asked Maria if I could take her art class, and she said sure. Her lesson was to teach the residents how to draw birds.

This was a timely subject for me, and the Mansion residents love it when we are together, joking and ribbing each other. I got high marks for my bird. I took some photos, of course, and they speak for themselves. Maria said I did well, but she doesn’t believe in grades. “Everyone gets an A for showing up,” she said, “even you.” Maria is a great teacher; she is patient, clear, and affirming. The residents love her, as do I. I loved the class, I will invite her to my next meditation class. They love us together. They love to hear our stories of the farm. There was a lot of love in that room.

Rachel is a good students, she loves to learn and was the first to finish her bird.

Jane is a gifted artist and a good friend of mine. She loves to pat my head and hug me. We worked together.

I was the last to finish my bird, it was, alas, not the best bird. No surprise.

Maria’s enthusiasm is boundless. She drew guides on the chalkboard and worked with every resident on their birds.

Ellen hugs Zinnia every time on her way back to Memory Care. They adore one another.

The Mansion, A Poem By Sharon Denney: “Everything I Do, I Am Comforted By You…”

by Jon Katz

Sharon Denney is a poet, a friend, and the head of the Mansion Residents Association. She is also a published poet living in the Mansion and dealing with several health problems. Occasionally, she writes a poem, which I read to other residents in my Meditation Class. I gave her a realistic “cat” she loves and keeps in her room for company. I was in the Mansion today, and Sharon kindly brought me her newest poem.

I’ll read it to the Mansion residents on Friday, but I wanted to share it with you. Sharon is impressive; she is brave, dignified, and uncomplaining. I know she is suffering, and her poems heal her and others. She is committed to her creativity and her poetry.

Poem: “Everything I do,” by Sharon Denney.

Everything I do,

I am comforted by you,

When I look at the moon

I know where ever you are,

you are looking at the same one,

When I look at a large sugar maple in the Fall

It’s all oranges, reds and yellows;

So beautiful is nature.

What you see with your eyes;

You feel with your heart,

Emotions run high; happiness is great.

True love abides

The moon is smiling.”

Photo Album: The Last Meeting Of The Mansion Meditation Class Of 2023. It Was A Sweet One

by Jon Katz

Today was the last meeting of the Mansion Meditation Class that I have been teaching for several years now.

We have all come a long way. The first members used to fall asleep when I talked about meditation, now they are wide awake and urging me to meditate for longer periods. They have found that it helps to center and calm them. Life in the Mansion, like life almost anywhere, is not simple.

I read from Henri Nouwen’s Spiritual Direction: Wisdom For The Long Walk Of Faith:

The first and most essential spiritual practice that any spiritual director must pursue,” wrote Nouwen, “is the discipline of the Heart. Introspection and contemplative prayer are the ancient disciplines by which we begin to see God in our hearts. Interior prayer is a careful attentiveness to the spirit that dwells in the center of our being.”

I focus on spirituality, not just God, but the residents are religious, and I honor that.

We did a lot of relaxing and meditating today. We were laughing almost to the beginning. I told Rachel she couldn’t have lunch unless she meditated, and we all cracked up. She meditated and went to lunch.

Maria came along today and helped the residents finish their artwork, and she read several beautiful poems from Mary Oliver. This class has become very important to me. Zinnia shines as a therapy dog at the Mansion; she’s been coming here since she was a small pup.

The people in the class love Maria, and I love it when she comes along. We work very well together. Her art class is always jammed and happy.

She knows them all well and feels safe and at ease there.

The residents adore her, and some rub her belly with their feet as she lies on her back beneath the table and practically purrs with delight.

There was a lot of laughing and goodwill. We trust one another and listen to one another.

Maria and I are returning to the Mansion on Christmas day to say hello to the residents who have no families or who can’t get to see them. This class has become a discipline of the Heart. Nouwen would be pleased. I am grateful. I decided to do a little photo spread, which tells a lot about the class.

I joke and kid a lot and poke fun at myself. Nothing makes them happier to poke fun at me. I always bring them stories of the farm, and they love to hear them. The class is coming to the farm this Spring as soon as it gets warm. Then, we do breathing lessons and meditation.

There is so much warmth and good feeling in that room. Come and see for yourself.

Zinnia greets everyone in the class, one by one, and she goes to sleep under the table when she’s finished. She makes a point of seeing Robbin, one of the Mansion’s aides.

Maria tells stories about living with me and life on the farm. The residents eat it up. They are fascinated by my relationship with Zip.

We welcomed Betty to the class today; she’s a  newcomer to the Mansion and wants to join the Meditation group. We are happy to have her there.

Art is one of the residents who must be accompanied everywhere he goes in the Mansion. Maria offered to walk him to lunch, and he put his arm around hers like I sometimes do. She and Zinnia (followed by me) walked him to the dining room. He is the sweetest man. I brought him two new car magazines to read.

Ellen asked Maria for help with her drawing. Maria is pleased to be obliged. The two of them were laughing like sisters.

Maria talked about her art and the different ways to draw. They were hungry to hear about it.

I miss the class very much when I can’t get there. We’ll see most of them on Christmas day. Ellen wants to do some Christmas meditating; Nancy wants to join us.

Zinnia sleeps next to my shoes when I start giving my meditation instructions. I don’t take it seriously. She is a beautiful dog. She does a lot of good in the world.

When I go to my class, Zinnia runs ahead of me and rushes into the Activity Room. I can hear the claps and squeals of joy and laughter pouring out of the room.

Like a chorus, I hear the words “Zinnia is here,, Zinnia!,” all the way down the hall.  Sometimes, they even yell hello to me.

I love the sound.

Christmas Tablecloths Arrive At The Mansion, Just In Time

by Jon Katz

The Christmas tablecloths for the Mansion arrived just in time for Christmas. Thanks to your help and generosity, the Mansion now has tablecloths and plastic covers for every year’s season. Today, I just ordered paper floral arrangements as centerpieces for the tables.

Tablecloths are a big deal at the Mansion. The residents spend a lot of time at the dinner tables; it’s an integral part of their days, socially and emotionally. Thank you so much for your support.

To contribute to the Mansion, you can donate via Paypal, [email protected] or Venmo, J0n Katz@Jon-Katz- 13, or by check, Jon Katz, Mansion Fund, P.O. 205, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816. You’ve helped make this Christmas brighter for good people on the edge of life.

Sweater Blast: Making “Ugly” Christmas Sweaters Uglier – The Mansion “Ugly” Christmas Sweater Party Is Close. Maria And I Are The Judges

by Jon Katz

We had an “Ugly” sweater gathering at the Mansion this afternoon; Maria and Paryese, the Mansion activity director, and Robin, a Mansion aide, helped the residents apply the Christmas decorations we brought to make their “Ugly Christmas Party” sweaters uglier.

It was a blast. Maria loves this stuff. My job was to make smartass remarks and take a lot of photos.

I’m not sure I ever saw the residents have more fun than that. The sweaters will be worn to an “Ugly Sweater Christmas Party.” Maria and I will be the judges choosing the ugliest and most creative sweaters.

Robin used hot glue to fasten the Christmas ornaments to the sweater.

We got most of the sweaters done. The pictures speak for themselves. Come and take a look. And thanks for donating some of your “Ugly” Christmas sweaters. We have enough.

We are very much looking forward to the party. All three of us, Maria, me and Zinnia, are invited and have accepted.

Our Mansion work is a joy to us and, hopefully, to them. Paryese says they very much look forward to our visits. We do also. My Meditation class is moving to Friday.

Tomorrow morning, I get up early to get some bloodwork done before my meeting with Amy, my primary care nurse, on Friday. It’s my regularly scheduled visit.

Claudia worked on her “ugly” vest.

The room was full and everyone was excited.

Art loved his sweater.

Robin and Paryese helped Jane to get her sweater fixed up.

Robin, Ruth and Zinnia worked on Ruth’s sweater.

Mansion Aide Kelly stopped in to give June a hug.

Claudia’s end result, a vest with all kinds of decorations.

Nancy picked out the decorations she wanted from a basket full of Christmas tree decorations. We got them at the Senior Center Thrift Shop.

Paryese and Art glue his decorations onto the sweater he chose.

I’m unsure who got this sweater, but Activity Director Paryese was proud of it.

June’s sweater.

Robin glued the decorations on a sweater.

Maria has experience in untying knots.
