Hospice Journal: Izzy, Jean, on the edge of life

by Jon Katz

April 30, 2009 – Izzy met a new hospice patient, Jean, in her Washington County Home yesterday. Jean, a retired librarian, lives surrounded by books and music and entered the hospice program this week. She and Izzy bonded instantly, and we will be regular visitors there.
I am always a bit taken aback by the grace, humor and acceptance I find in hospice work. Jean was gracious and welcoming, and Izzy slipped into her life at this time.
How strange that these visits are so much fun, and give so much back to me, and to Izzy. I took some time off from hospice work – it was too intense for a bit – and am very grateful to be back, and to know Jean.
This afternoon, back to John Clark’s Dairy Farm for more photos. I love life up here, perhaps because you can get to close to real life.

Hospice Journal: Izzy, Alice

by Jon Katz

My candles, in the morning sun, after a dinner

Izzy and I went to a nursing home this afternoon to see Alice, who is a century old and is close to the end of her life. She is an avid reader, and especially wanted to meet Izzy. Alice could not talk, but was trasformed at the sight of Izzy, and reached out to touch him repeatedly. He lay next to her, and put his head on her stomach. Alice’s family was especially grateful to Izzy, and he and I were grateful for the opportunity to be there. We may go back tonight to take some photos.
