Moving Chronicles: Spirit Dog

Moving Chronicles: Spirit Dog

I’ve learned to have great faith in the power of dogs as magical helpers to spark and mark the passages of life. Julius and Stanley marked my life as a writer. Orson to Bedlam Farm. Rose to living here. Lenore to Love. Izzy to the human experience. Frieda to Maria and beyond. This week, I asked Frieda if she would become the spirit of our move to a New Bedlam Farm, and almost immediately things began to happen. We met the owners of the new place and liked them very much. We got a dumpster (more about that later, along with a Simon bray), and people began calling about buying this farm.

Dogs are among the magical helpers Joseph Campbell writes about on the Hero’s Journey. In their own way, they help to guide us where we need to go. Freida knows about moving. She is already at work helping us with ours.

The Frieda Reading Campaign

Freida: Coming to a reading near you

Maria is softening in her adamant opposition to Frieda going to a book reading (we’re not even married yet and we’re fighting about Frieda). I think she’s ready to get good and socialized with the right crowd in the right place, as long as she’ s with me (I’ve taken to calling her my “little pumpkin seed.”). Maybe with Lenore coming too, to show her the way. Frieda gets nervous and makes noise around people, but has never harmed anyone. Done carefully it might work. I’ve been annoying Maria about this for weeks. Today she said she might consider it. She’s afraid Frieda might get into trouble.

Smile. The Hound of Love (a/k/a The Love Dog) is at work.

by Jon Katz

May 4, 2009 – Time has shown that a person cannot look at Lenore and fail to smile, and this is turning out to be true of animals as well. Today, Lenore licked a donkey, sniffed a grumpy barn cat, teased the workaholic Rose into play, calmed Freida the Helldog and woke me up by gnawing on my nose and burping loudly.
Lenore is a messenger for love, spreading smiles and good will wherever she goes. She has been promoted to the Bedlam Farm Supervisor of Love, and her job is to see that everyone stays loose. It works. Show Lenore’s photo to the grumpiest of people and they will smile.
