A True Story: The Love Dog and the Barn Cat

by Jon Katz

April 23, 2008 – When I say Lenore is a Warrior for Love, I mean it.  She is not only loving, but is relentness in her pursuit of love, softening even the hardest hearts.
Since coming to the farm last August, she has tried to love every creature on the farm, and will not quit, as ferocious as her pursuit as a missionary seeking converts. She charmed the obnoxious and self-absorbed goats, befriended the wary sheep, won over the jealous donkeys (she has not tried to love Elvis, and she does not even seem to see Elvis).
From the first, Mother, the Queen of the Barn, has wanted nothing to do with Lenore, running or spitting at her, generally vanishing when she comes around. Barn Cats know how  to make themselves scarce. Lenore is never deterred. She got Rose to play, charmed Izzy into cuddling with her, even gotten Winston the rooster to accept her sniffing.
Finally, Lenore, the Hound of Love, got her way. She approached Mother by the stone wall behind the house, and sniffed at her, and then shocked Mother by licking her nose, tail wagging furiously.
Mother is a tough case, and there are carcasses all over the farm and barns to prove it.
I thought Mother would tear Lenore’s nose off, but instead, she stayed still, and gave Lenore a soft (no claws) tap on the nose. For that, she got another lick, the Hound of Love won over yet another creature with her big heart.
 And Mother lay down.
