Book tour: What people tell me

by Jon Katz

November, my least favorite month, is almost here. Got the laundry done and head out in the morning for the Hadley Experiment. It will be fun. Then to Framingham Barnes & Noble Thursday evening, 7 p.m.

What did people tell me on the book tour?

– Cost is a big factor in book purchases. Hardcover books can be expensive.

– Lots of e-book readers, but much passion for bookstores and for getting some books in print, saving them, giving them to friends and family.

-They don’t necessary want stories that are upbeat, but they don’t want to spent $25 to feel crummy.

– They are desperate to talk to writers, learn more about writing, interact more. It’s an expectation as well as an interest.

– Everybody is on Facebook, many on Twitter. They will come to events to see writers they like if they know in advance.

– Reading, like movies, is a balm and an escape. It is alive and well.

– People like to see photographs of light, color and animals. They want to read stories about dogs and other animals.

-They want to know how stories and ideas are crafted and marketed.

-They hate politics and politicians.
