Donkeys have seen lots of storms in their day, and they are my guide for handling them. They get to a warm dry place and stand still. If they see a human who might be giving them a carrot, they come out, eat the carrot and go back out to stand and wait. They accept their lives.
I love Wendelly Berry’s question: “What Are People For?” in our society.
Are they:
– More important than corporate profits?
– Than wars?
-Than immigration policy?
-Than deficits?
-Than profit and loss?
– Than banks and car companies?
-Than the outsourcing of jobs?
-Than the bottom line?
-Than angry and craven politicians?
– Than globalism?
– Than corporate farms?
– Than mergers and acquisitions?
– Than industrialized and mechanized food production?
I wonder if they ought to be.
