Inside A Book Tour: Framingham

by Jon Katz
First reading

The book tour is on. Reading to kid’s is different. I brought a video but we didn’t have the right equipment to play it, so we used a Mac laptop.  Had an SRO crowd by the time we got started. I showed the video, read from the book, and took questions, mostly from adults. The kids liked the story – relating to Lenore and Frieda in particular, I think. In one sense, these readings are easier. There are not hours-long discussions. In another sense, they are more complex, as kids that age are indirect, restless and  idiosyncratic.

I really enjoyed it. I love the challenge of reaching a new audience. I think the story translates  well to kids, and I liked talking about the point of the book: love is work and if four dogs can get along, perhaps adults can. This is the simple day. Tomorrow, back home and then out to the Midwest, Pacific Northwest and Northeast. Some days there are four readings and talks in a day. I am a Book Tour Road Whore. I love to get out there and make noise for my books. Maria was along tonight and we found a great seafood restaurant. Lots of nice people showed up with nice things to say about my work. I have a great feeling about this book and this book tour. There is a nice vibe to it, and I love connecting with kids in this way. Kids have not been in my life much the last few years. I miss them, their simplicity, their ready smiles, their innocence.
