Simon and McKenzie

by Jon Katz
Connection

If we take Simon, McKenzie Barrett will remain a part of his life. The two of them have a potent connection, the kind Maria has with Lulu and Fanny and we wouldn’t want to see it lost. You can see that McKenzie helped bring this poor creature back to life. His hooves are done, his teeth are fixed, he is deloused and wormed and on painkillers. Our farrier, Ken Norman, says he will be fine, if cared for properly. We are talking about taking him this afternoon. We are talking about cost, responsibility, the the nature of the farm. I think we both want to do it, but we want to be careful about it. So I’ll put up a video, some photos, and let you know what we have decided. If we take him, he will be on the farm tomorrow, and will be on hand for Maria’s Art Show in the Pig Barn Gallery this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 11 to 5 (no dogs, gifts, please).

Lulu and Fanny, we expect, will be out of joint for awhile if he comes. But I’ve learned more than once to acclimate new animals slowly and carefully. Simon has rain rot as well as bedsores and other problems, so he needs to be dry.
