The creative soul. Be at the table. Don’t be lunch

by Jon Katz
Sometimes you are lunch...

Hemingway said once that we all have a basic choice in life – to be at lunch, or on the menu. I think that is so. We are born with a creative soul, a creative spark that is, to me, the essence of God and spirituality. Freeing that soul our challenge, our test, our calling.

Life is challenging, and if often engulfs us – money worries, illness, health, obligation, and fear. There are so many things that can get in the way, block and discourage us, so many people who live in anger, judgment, fear and disconnection. I have been railroaded by these things so many times in my life.

At some point, I listened to Hemingway.  I decided to sit at the table, and not to be lunch. It is a defining moment in one’s life. There really isn’t any turning back. It is like leaping off the bridge and into the water, a leap of faith, an affirmation of spirit. There are no guarantees, no nets. It is not the place of safety, but it is the place of life.

I think of this process as a coming out of the creative soul, the moment when one chooses to tell their story, make their move, let the creative soul grow and thrive. This is, to me, always a sacred moment, the essence of spirituality, the light and the hope. I wish it for me. I wish it for everyone else.
