Red’s Spot. My Waldo

by Jon Katz
Red's Spot

Red is my Waldo. He goes anywhere, does anything. We were in the New Bedlam Farm this morning, and he came in and found himself a spot under a table, where he sat quietly for an hour until we were ready to go. He is at home under the living room table as he is in the pasture. Every time I look up he is there.

Red was in his crate at night the first few weeks, but now he is out at night. He sleeps on the floor next to my bed. He does not move an inch all night or make a sound. I have loved many dogs, but I feel I have been waiting for this guy my whole life. To have a partner like Maria, work that I love, a dog like this – I did not imagine it, and thanks again, my friend Karen –  and animals that I love – I give thanks every day. In the face of so much dour and disturbing news, I appreciate what I have.
