Rocky: Blind For Life – Retinal Detachment

by Jon Katz
Rocky: Blind For Life

Dr. Sarah Jensen came to the new farm this morning to examine Rocky. She said he was totally blind in both eyes, and the cause was  not Moon Blindness, as is common in Appaloosa’s –  Rocky is definitely an Appaloosa, she said – but retinal detachment. There is no cure, and Rocky will never see again. She said he is is doing well, has a remarkably good disposition and has learned to live well without sight.

He might have sustained an injury that caused the detachment – it isn’t clear.

She also found several infected teeth in his mouth and has already spent two hours pulling two. Some of his teeth were sharp, and there was scar tissue all over the inside of his mouth. Eatiing was painful for him, she said, a reason why he sometimes appeared thin. She is still working on his mouth. I’ve got some photos and  video of her examination and the teeth-pulling (some blood) and I will post more this afternoon. She is impressive and we are grateful. Rocky will not see again, but he will be healthier and more comfortable. She sedated him and Maria has been helping keep him calm. More later.
