The Drama Of Creation: Making The Studio Barn

by Jon Katz
The Creative Process: The Studio Barn

I was supposed to be scraping the side of the studio barn, but I had my camera with me as always and I couldn’t take my eyes off the scene right before me through the windows. Here was me, a writer and photographer, outside scraping, and Ben, an artist if ever there was one, on the floor applying the second coat of polyurethane and Maria in the window glazing the windows. Three creative spirits blessing the new Studio Barn, all working together within a few feet of one another, yet apart and in different worlds. By fiddling with my aperture setting, I was able to capture images of all of us – but especially Ben and Maria, in a sort of creative ballet.

I was mesmerized. I felt as if I was witnessing the drama of creative, the unleashing of the sacred spark in all of us, three people working together to make another creative space in the world. I put up a photo album on Facebook. I learned something new about the power of photography to capture the best spirit in the human soul.
