Poem: Contract With My Heart

by Jon Katz
Contract With My Heart
Contract With My Heart

Even lovers don’t tell one another,

all of their secrets,

they keep some of them,

those that reside in the shy and private regions,

to themselves.

My heart and I have signed a contract,

we promise to be much more intimate even than that,

my heart must keep the location of my biggest freckles to herself,

but we will keep no more secrets from one another,

we will whisper in one another’s ears,

like the new lovers that we are.

The heart is like that,

once it has known divine beauty it is both

blessed and ruined.

My heart is wise,

and wishes to be loyal,

and seeks to know the warmth

at the center of our perfect circle,

and take me there.
