The Purity Of Text

by Jon Katz

This morning, I find I am unable to upload photos to the blog, and after some confusing, testing and messaging, I am leaving this issue in the capable of hands of Mannix Marketing, my Web designers and maintainers. I have been posting photos on the blog almost since it’s inception in 2007, and had a sense of panic and disorientation before it occurred to me to turn this into a creative experience and post in words only – the way it all began, after all – until the blog is fixed.

I am a word writer and have been for most of my life, I took my first photo five years ago, yet it is almost unimaginable for me to be offering an account of my life in text only. It’s amazing how the human imagination and neural system reacts to change, especially creative change. For me, and I suspect for many of you, the images are as important as the words in our time, we are used to hyper-media, we expect to see everything and instantly.

It will be interesting for me to see if the other way of communicating still works for me, or for you, even if it only lasts for a few hours. Christmas was a mixed blessing for Maria and I, it is a hard holiday for us in so many ways. We had a blast running around Boston for a few days, and that city will become a new part of our experience, we hope to go back often, especially if our newly discovered hotel offers some cheap rooms on quiet days.

For the next few hours, perhaps even for a day, I’ll post my photos on Facebook and my words here, the way it began. It feels awkward for me, I took some good photos this morning – Tyler coming over with a neat Christmas gift (a birdhouse for the window, you can see the birds but they can’t see you) Christmas gift, Lulu at the feeder.  I guess the challenge for me is to pain the photos in words, the way I always did.
