My Own Secret Service

by Jon Katz
My Own Secret Service

Sometimes, when I go out to the pasture hauling hay in my arms, I think of Red as my own personal Secret Service detail, it can be chaotic out there – especially on a cold morning with hungry sheep and donkeys, who have been known to knock me over. Red fans out ahead of me, and pushes the sheep to the other side of the feeder, and then escorts Liam, a wether (neutered male) to the other side of the feeder with the other sheep.

Fate tries to look tough and join in, she tries to hem the sheep in. This way I can walk straight up to the feeder without being knocked over or bumped into, scatter the hay and then step back. Red makes sure no one comes to my side of the feeder until I have walked away. Mr. Dependable. He gets it done with no drama, bloodshed or chaos.
