The Little Free Library: Painting No. 40,0001

by Jon Katz
The Little Free Library

It took us nearly two hours to polyurethane the roof of the Little Free Library and paint the first blue coat on the sides. Lots more work to do. Maria will do the front trim later this afternoon, we are fending off rain showers. Gus has been vigilant, he  is just like our other dogs.

He hangs around and is curious, he never goes far and ignored the busy road 50 yards away. Maria and I both love the free library movement, and it is a movement. In our disconnected time, we are making contact with strangers and building a new kind of community.

I have a fantasy that Washington, like the arctic iceberg, will break off one day and float off into the sea. We are about two  hours away from finishing the first round of painting.

We are the 40,001st Free Library to be set up in America, according to the website.
