Sunset, Route 22

by Jon Katz
The Sunset

I’ve watched the beautiful sunsets in the fields across from the farmhouse for years, but have never been able to capture the wonderful feeling of the sun dropping over the hill. I stood out there for a half hour today with my new lens, the Archomat, trying to see if this time I could get the feel of it. I must have taken 100 shots, this lens is so difficult to master.

When I saw the sunlight bursting through the trees, I thought I might have caught the feeling of it.

I know I came close, this one had a lot of emotion. Photography, like training dogs, has taught me patience and determination. I can wait now, the time will come.

  1. I have followed you on your blog since you wrote “The Loneliness of Rose” for Slate. I had just gotten a computer, yes, late but so enjoyed the story. Been with you thru Elvis, breakdown etc. Enjoyed your straight forward pictures and stories of your life, farm and animals..a relief, a bit of joy, in the middle of the night, at times in a Trauma ICU ( I am an RN) you wrote so profoundly in your pain, but made it clear you did not want feedback. Yes you have changed, as we all should if we are on a quest to be a better human..but regarding your photos, it is all a personal opinion however blurry pictures are just that. I do believe that is why you got such a reaction. In the day, I got pleasure, from your farm stories with photos. Creative art photos are for another market, just saying…..

    1. Cherie, thanks for your support and interest. I should tell you that I have sold 100 photos from the new lens this week alone, had more requests to buy them than ever and hundreds of lovely messages. I take the photos for me, not for others, and if people like them I am happy, but if they don’t it’s really not my concern. I’m the one I have to please…Mostly, the reaction to the photos have been wonderful, and market wise, I have never done better or come close. It’s fine if you find them blurry, other people see something more. I have learned not to make the mistake of thinking that because I like or don’t like something, everyone else must feel the same way. My own feeling is that if I see something I personally don’t like, I just move on,I don’t need to tell them.

  2. Don’t pay any attention to anyone telling you that your shots using the Archomat are anything less than wonderful. You have tempted me to consider getting the Archomat, but realistically, I don’t have the time to play with it. The photos are wonderful, so much like an impressionist painting. Your other photos are excellent too, but the Archomat takes your photography to a much higher level of art.

    1. Thank Susan, the Achromat is wonderful, but it is very time consuming and tricky. Good for obsessives, for sure..I appreciate the good words…
