Booties!….Er….No

Booties

It was frigid on the farm this morning, yesterday I bought some booties for Gus.

There are two things I swore I would never do in my life with dogs – buy a sweater or booties.

I was inundated with pleas and warnings from small dog people, and so I relented and bought a sweater. When I saw that the weather forecast called for -14 tomorrow night, I relented and bought some booties at a pet shop.

But Gus is not co-operating. He does not seem to notice the cold, does not shiver or rush to go inside. This morning, he shook his booties off in seconds – there are serious stay-on issues with these things – and chase Fate all around the yard.

When his feet got chilly, he simply came to the back door, went inside and went to sleep by the fireplace. I don’t think the sweater or booty thing is going to work.

  1. I gave up on boots. I just pay attention when they are out in the cold and snow. I am ready to go out and rescue if needed. Our first winter in NY (after living in Texas) my little dog did have a couple times where she would just stop in the yard because of the cold paws and I would go grab her.

    1. Very wise, Michelle, and true. Early in the morning, Gus sometimes hops around a bit, and I bring him in, but today it was frigid and he didn’t seem to notice..

  2. I have many friends with Jack Russells who have many wonderful blankets of all types and post many pictures of them in all sorts of weather. I, too, have Jacks and I also have wonderful blankets. But my dogs, like Gus, laugh at them and go out in our frigid temperatures naked.

  3. Had the same “bootie” problem with my English Setter. Very funny watching the antics of Bootie Removal. As for the sweater, no way. Hunting dogs aren’t wimps!!

  4. Living in Edmonton, Alberta, boots are a necessity for any breed other than a husky type. But it’s a rodeo at first -dogs bucking around the yard like broncos! I wish I had video of it. Wrestling a reluctant dog into boots is a good workout; you’re all sweaty by the time you’re done.

  5. I also bought booties, as I walk my dog every day in the fields by my house. Not working. However I have now purchased musher’s secret pet paw protection wax and am waiting for it’s arrival. We’ll see how that goes.
