Portrait, A Dog Named Bud. One Month

by Jon Katz
A Dog Named Bud

This Saturday, it will be a month since Bud came to us, and his very strong personality is still emerging. We see that he was very closed up when he came, as to be expected.

And I know his first two years are hard, that will always be a part of him, I think. But he is a character, strong and independent He can be excited, he can be cautious, he can be very loving.

He is not closed up now.

He is calming down around food, he is beginning to see he will get  his fair share of treats and food. He and Fate play all day. He doesn’t mind extreme weather so far.

He is trustworthy in the pasture, the sheep and donkeys have accepted him, and he understands that they are part of the family, not hostile creatures. He has stopped his marking.

Once in awhile, he will pick up a scent, and we see the terrier in him, he is difficult to recall, and to get his attention. So no walks in the woods for now. He is only in the crate when we go out of the house, otherwise he has the run of the house.

Bud is very affectionate with people, which is great, and has overcome his initial caution around men. When the oil man get to fill our tank, Bud ran over and greeted him, was happy to be petted.

Bud is very curious, he is still studying me and  Maria, and the house. He opens his eyes and tilts his head when he wants to figure something out, and I can take his portrait by whining like a dog or growing.

Easier than putting a treat on my head. We are lucky to have Bud, he was worth the wait. I think his testosterone level is coming down too.

  1. I’m so glad he’s adjusting—my dog Benji was abused by animal control before a rescue group took him in and he was with them for about a year or year and half. Then I adopted him and like Bud it took him quite a while to adjust—-the only thing he is still struggling with is his hatred of men—he tolerated my husband until he passed away but now he has a strong dislike of men. Thank you for listening and I continue to pray for Bud’s continued progress.

  2. Our Boston Bunny came to us as a retired mom at the age of 2yrs. We are at the 18 mo mark and still dealing with some anxiety but she has made great progress. He will be fully adjusted in no time as you are putting in the work. Happy Gotcha Day to you all!!
