Radio Show: Thomas, The Prodigy And His New Monitor

by Jon Katz

I had my third radio broadcast on WBTNAM 1370 today, I love doing this broadcast, the station is a bit rough around the edges, but that just makes it more fun. Every show is something of a triumph.

We had live calls from all over the country, and for people who couldn’t get through to the 866 406 9286. .

For those of you who missed it, there is a podcast of the broadcast, you can find it here at WBTNAM.US

I enjoy working with Thomas Toscano, he has a lightning-quick mind and big heart and am amazed at the depth of this man. The chemistry is great.

Toscano is an onion with many peels. A child prodigy, he studied with the brilliant conductor Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood and  ran his own opera company in Brooklyn.

I’m not sure how he got from there to here, he lives in an apartment in Bennington and although he is a passionate dog lover, he says he can’t have a dog now because he can’t afford to pay the vet bills.

He doesn’t actually sleep in the station, but it’s close, he does 22 hours of live radio himself and is working day and night to get the station up and running once more.

WBTN is a Community Radio station and every CR station is a precious jewel it the age of corporate media.

I am excited to have my show there, it is great fun working with Thomas. We have a great chemistry together, and I imagine both of us can be quite difficult at times.

Today we got calls from Sante Fe, Ohio, California, New York, and Minnesota, among other places.

Thomas is a fiercely individualistic man, and he is immensely grateful for the computer equipment – including the monitor above that arrived today – purchased for him by the Army Of Good.

We bought him a new production monitor and computer to run the six computers used in the radio station. He said it will save him countless hours a week in work, and he said it was a “miracle.”

The broadcast is a miracle for me as well as for Tommy.

It is a connection with animal lovers from all over the country, and their stories and perceptions and questions are genuinely fascinating to me. It is a conversation, we are all good to one another no yelling, arguing, insulting.

It was a breakthrough to suggest e-mailing me questions live, I keep my Iphone on and get a steady stream of questions, online and live.

I explored calling people at home, but the station would have to pay for the calls and they have little or not money.

So thanks for the support for the little radio station that could, and for me, and for our animals. I called a huge vet complex nearby – the West Mountain Veterinary Clinic – I told them about the broadcast and they invited Thomas and I to come by and introduce ourselves to them.

They are just up the road from the station.

I have this feeling they might make a great sponsor for “Talking To Animals” – and being a sponsor of a WBTN show costs around $50 a month.

Nobody is pushing me, but I feel obliged to try to get the station a sponsor for my show. They don’t really have a functioning sales staff.

And they could sure use the money. Thanks so much for buying the production computer. They were practically dancing with joy and wonder.

  1. Sad to have missed the show, and glad there is a Podcast for it, Jon. This is another way for you to spread your good. Thank you for the continuing inspiration to do what we can, where we are.

  2. Maybe Thomas could foster a dog through a rescue group and they pay for the Vet bills, food, etc. At least they do where I live. The only drawback is you foster till they are adopted. However, our rescue group has dogs that are being fostered for years or till they die because their health is such they may have health issues that are too expensive that no one will adopt or they just aren’t “cute” enough. They are the long term fosters but still deserve love and a home. Just a thought.
