Bud, My Napping Partner

by Jon Katz

The last two weeks, I’ve been taking some medication that sometimes makes me drowsy, and so I have tried to nap in the late afternoons, which has worked out.

I find that I have a napping partner for the first time, when I lie down in my big chair and put a blanket in my lap – it’s cold up here, Bud hops up, squeezes in where he can, and starts snoring.

I discouraged this at first, how could I sleep with a dog who sounds like a garbage truck when he sleeps, and rattles glasses when he snores? It turns out I have no trouble sleeping, I go out like a light.

These quiet times have become my meditation hour, they help me to ground myself and also to rest, two things that are not always easy for me to do. The wood stove is nearby and Bud loves a wood stove, but he always hops up to join me in my rest.

But helps me to relax, I sleep deeply and well, and sometimes just meditate and listen to music. I am refreshed and full of myself when I wake up. Once in a awhile, he stirs and shifts and opens his eyes, andย  I always have my Iphone in my pocket.

Bud is my new napping partner, and I have developed this new thing: I can’t bring myself to move while he is sleeping.ย  Bud has to get up on his own, I have to get over this.

  1. Bud has many gifts, including helping you to rest and revive. It is lovely how things work out.

Next year this time I bet the cold doesn’t bother him as he regains health and strength

  2. I think that it’s the feeling that he chose you, specifically you, that keeps you from being able to move him! ๐Ÿ™‚
