Mansion Update: Delays And Inspections

by Jon Katz

State inspectors are delaying the return of the Mansion residents for the third or fourth time. Fire officials have cleared the building for occupation but the very zealous state health officials seem to find something new to look for every day.

This delay is very hard on the Mansion residents, several are getting sick in their temporary facility in Hoosick Falls, colds and stomach infections seem to be spreading through the building.

The Danforth Adult Care facility is not the Mansion.

The Mansion staff is increasingly concerned about “their residents” and so am I. Nobody can quite figure out why an asbestos inspection was suddenly ordered by the State Department Of Labor yesterday, there is no evidence of asbestos in the building.

But it will take several days before the tests can be done and the building cleared for the residents’ return.

The Mansion has repaired the roof and replaced all of the carpets in the building and re-built some walls. The place looks great and is ready for their residents to return.

There is a lot of frustration among the staff and depression and worry about the residents. I brought Word Search puzzles, flowers, cookies and books and stickers, today, I’m bringing a load of puzzles  (after my radio show) and I’ll so some readings for the residents.

We are planning a Homecoming Celebration involving music and food.

The displaced residents are bored as well as anxious. Some are visibly depressed, in bed for much of the day.

We have postponed our Homecoming Celebration until the middle of next week, we all hope all of the inspections and repairs will be completed before then.

I will be candid, this is wrenching to see. People at their most fragile or torn from all that is familiar in the middle of the night with no warning. I hope the state bureaucrats understand the emotional impact of their delays.

The earliest possible return date for the residents would be Friday, next Monday or Tuesday is also possible. Thanks for your financial support, I have $1.100 in the Mansion Fund, it seems some of the residents are in need of clothes, some from the water incident, some just in need.

Two of the residents got sick enough to require medical help.

I want to poll each one of the displaced residents and see what they need and what might cheer them up in their current facility and when they return.

I have enough money for right now, I will put to very good use any additional funds that come in. I know they will be needed.

Small amounts are as welcome as big ones. You can contribute via Paypal, [email protected], or by mail: Jon Katz, Mansion Fund, P.O. Box 205, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816. And thank you.

You have made a tremendous difference during this emergency. The residents feel safer knowing there is help out there.  And they love getting things.

They love their stuffed animals, flowers, cookies, puzzles, hats, games and stickers. They have made a huge difference. I brought a dozen Word Search puzzles so they can occupy their minds a bit.

P.S. We put up a Mansion Amazon Wish List yesterday, it sold out in three minutes, so quickly some people thought it was malfunctioning. Thanks for that. I am still figuring out and how best to help. The longer this goes on, the more help will be needed. So grateful for the Army Of Good.

  1. Jon- I too would *wish* that the state bureaucrats would recognize and acknowledge the impacts their delays in this matter have in this case……. but sadly, I cannot be optimistic on this front. The needs of many, especially the elderly, have sadly been reduced, often times, to being on the fringes……. and only through individual caring, action and compassion, can those needs be addressed. I’m so happy you are stepping in to help alleviate the residents distress……and the AOG is in full force!
