Booties And Socks Experiment: It’s Over

by Jon Katz

Bud went through $35 worth of booties and socks in about ten minutes this afternoon. I’m pleased that so many of you have dogs that like to wear shoes in the winter, so far, I am not impressed. If I were Consumer Reports, I’d flunk several companies right away.

One company send two booties, it didn’t occur to me that wouldn’t send four. Another was simply impossible to get around Bud’s foot. He pulled off the socks in about five seconds, and when I taped them up, they just fell off as soon as he set food in the ice and the mud.

If he didn’t pull the others off, they fell off. I can’t imagine how or why so many people get these things on their dogs, I’m sure it’s my fault, but I’m abandoning the booties and switching instead to the wax, at least it can’t fall off or be pulled off.

Is something wrong with me, or are these booties a sham? I’m happy to admit mistakes, but these are not for me, or for my dog.

On the other hand, I’m pleased to report I’ve just purchased my first bell-ringing chicken toy. I’ve crossed a line. I’m  hoping it will work out better than the booties. I won’t try them again. Congratulations to those of you who can make this wrong. I’m moving on.

  1. i put regular party balloons on my dog’s paws and it works. it’s cheap although it doesn’t last long. you just cut the top (which is the tightest part) and try.

  2. Have you ever tried the ones that look like balloons? A little hard to get on but they don’t come off easily. Called Pawz I think. They are also inexpensive.
I live in northern Michigan and have used them on my aussie and border collie mix dogs.

  3. Ha! Sled dogs wear booties. Maybe you should check with a musher. Or, not. Whatever. The chicken toy sounds like way more fun anyway. (For both you and Bud.)

  4. In AZ dogs wear boots to protect their paws from the blazing pavement. I couldn’t keep so much as a bandage on my dogs for more than five minutes.

In AZ small dogs travel in doggie strollers. At lunch in a restaurant at an outside table, I saw a woman order food for her dog who was in a stroller. She fed it to him with a fork. And didn’t eat herself. She appeared to be about forty. I was stunned.

  5. Ahaaaa! Dogs don’t like boots! About the only way to keep them on is to attach them like suspenders, and that’s a whole other problem!!!! I’m glad to see that you are thinking of your chickens.

  6. Believe me, Jon, there’s nothing wrong with you. The boots they sell in stores are junk, plain and simple. I get mine from a lady in Sherwood Park, Alberta. She makes them by hand. I know you can’t order them from New York, but her Facebook page is called Gemini Designs. The people are Ollie and Russell Kotyk. There are some photos of the boots on their Facebook page. Maybe you can find someone local who makes something similar. In the meantime, let us know how the wax works. I’ve never tried it.

  7. In his 14th year of life, my large 70lb American Bulldog began to drag/scrape his back feet as he walked. In order to prevent the tops of his toes from bleeding, over the course of 8 months I purchased at least 10 different brands/types/styles of dog boots. Everything from the $7 rubber balloon version to the $54 boots that supposedly sled dogs successfully wear. $54 was my limit.
Out of desperation, I even tried taping pairs of my husband’s socks onto my dog’s rear feet.

Every single pair of the dog boots either twisted or fell off of my dog after just a few steps onto the ground. It was beyond aggravating and after several months of readjusting and re-booting, I gave up.

  8. Oh boy!
    We have Bernese mountain dogs.
They love the snow, and I can assure you they wouldn’t wear those feet adornments.
They’d rather hold up theirs paws to indicate they’re cold.
Even then they’d rather stay outside
    I laugh
You and Maria live the weather first and then it comes to Maine, where we live
    Some things bind people together
    Common threads-like weather and dogs!

  9. Jon, as a long time dog sitter and dog walker, I have envisioned a dog coat, where the boots were attached to the sleeves of the coat – so the paws go into the boots as part of the sleeve. Just never sat down and sewed one, because my sewing skills are rather left to crafts and such. But think about it -I bet Maria could design and sew one! Her skills are quite developed. I see a “Bedlam Farm Coats with built-in Bootie” line!

  10. OOOh no! I’m just about to go to the pet store to buy my 10 yr. old dachshund booties. We’re going to have below 0 temps, not nearly as cold as you are having. Wonder what I will find there, and whether they will work. The look on Bud’s face was priceless.
