A Pin For Transgender Kids

by Jon Katz

I wear a necklace with a Stauralite stone from Taos, New Mexico that Maria got for me, and today I added a pin I purchased in support of Trans Gender kids. I’m not into stickers and buttons, but I love the Stauralite, and I am called to try to support Trans Gender children.

I don’t see this as a political stance, but as a spiritual one.

Every major religion in the history of the world advances the idea of caring for the poor, the needy and the vulnerable, and Trans Gender children are among the most vulnerable children in our country.

For me, spirituality is about empathy, sharing and caring for those who struggle to care for themselves. That’s why I support the refugees, that’s why I support the elderly.

Despite the widespread belief that organized religion stands for justice and compassion, in our time, religious people are among the most unrelenting persecutors of these children. Where, I often wonder, have all the Christians gone? He was the Prince of the different.

Could any literate person doubt that Jesus Christ would have cared for these children and supported and defended them? I have no doubt, and I’m not a Christian.

So I’m happy to wear this pin, it was purchased for $35 and sold by the National Center For Transgender Equality (NCTE).
